I get the streaking bit bit it was a very un-cost effective thing to do for a film back then including getting arrested and fined. But it is as you say to keep the intrest in us viewers that and the Mancs loved a naked italian girl running around the city center.

Come on guys... the whole thing's political. The fascist cop ("heil Hitler!"), the 'eco-terrorism,' the jabs at religion (like when the zombie is "praying" at the top of the stairs in the hospital). It's a big hippies vs. jingos scenario. And the streaker at the beginning is the filmmakers letting you know they're on the side of the hippies. Plus, you know, cuz its some boobs.

From Wikipedia

A few minutes into the film, Lovelock's character stops his motorbike at traffic lights in Manchester and following the craze at the time, a woman takes off a coat and streaks across the road. In the original "Living Dead at the Manchester Morgue" film, this was a voluptuous blonde running a long distance in slow motion spread right across the screen. Probably few males in the audience could have told you anything about the first ten minutes of the film. When it came out on video, this was reduced to a scrawny brunette who ran at full speed across the long crossing, seen from a distance. By time it came out as "Let Sleeping Corpses Lie", it was just a few glimpses of the streaking woman.

I just watched it and I saw the "scrawny brunette" streaker. Not bad at all but now I want to see the original "voluptuous blonde" in slow mo!!!

Yeah she wasn't scrawny. Very nice figure with big breasts.

Female streaking used to be a craze? Good God, the 21st century is a terrible time to be alive

I'm not sure about the veracity of this. The mention of the streaker on Wikipedia has been removed, and looking back into the page history, it was posted without any sources or references and I can find nothing to verify it.

Most likely someone saw it years ago, perhaps as a teenager, had a vague recollection of a streaking scene that their imagination embellished to fill in the gaps, creating a memory that the original scene failed to live up to upon further viewings. Or it was just wishful thinking. :P

The UK Anchor Bay DVD featured the different opening title sequences from the various versions of the film, but nothing on the streaker. Whoever compiled that DVD had access to most of all of the different cuts, so would likely have included the alternate streaking scene as an extra too. The DVD also came with a detailed booklet discussing the history of the film and its various released. That too included no reference to different streakers, but did mention a rumour that early cuts of the film showed the female zombie plucking out the cop's eye in the cemetery scene (a longer version of the shot that exists showing her eating one eyeball and reaching down for the other). This too seems to be an unintentional embellishment, and it's easy to see how the idea would take root in one's mind if there was years and years between viewings: the plucking of eyeballs is strongly implied but not actually shown, and the victim in the shot in question is clearly the real actor with some prosthetic wounds on his face, not an FX dummy, which would be required for the shot to work as described.

Bit of trivia it was actually filmed in Windamear not Manchester.

The opening 10 mins were filmed in manchester you can see central manchester and a few other buildings that still stand today.

ooooh. I stand corrected. Isn't it a brilliant film?

reply

I think the starting scene which includes the girl is brilliant. Factories, cars, trash, all that pollution, dead birds, people are taking drugs to make a trough the day. They just sit and stand in the busses or waiting for a one. Their inexpressive and and cold faces, like zombies fallen in some kinda of trance. Not even the naked girl in broad daylight wont get their attention. With this i think Grau is trying to say that our modern society has come to a state where we all are living dead.

It seemed to me like one of those hippy chicks strekaing for the cause. Like those radical feminists who prance around topless #ForTheCause. For attention obviously.

Superb scene by the way, she was bouncing all over the place.
