Holy Crap - This blew me away

I don't know if anyone here has seen The Departed (SPOILER ALERT), but goddam, the ending of this movie had the same kind of impact. The lovable and wrongfully accused protagonist is killed suddenly to the utter dismay of the viewer, only to be redeemed by the murder of the man who is responsible. However, this film was so much sweeter in its justice.

Aside from the truly awesome ending, everything about this movie was amazing: the atmosphere, the music, the script, the acting, the scenery. I've never felt so embedded in a horror movie before, and never so involved in the actual plot. The impending threat of both the zombies and the law simultaneously worked very well. It created suspense through horror and also as a more worldly thriller.

Alright, I just watched this movie for the first time and I'm pretty excited, but more objectively, this must have been a great influence for much to come. I'm positive Hot Fuzz was largely based on this (loosely), mainly in atmosphere. I've read that Shaun of the Dead references this, but I don't know where. The whole small English town murder mystery thing felt identical to hot fuzz. Also, the gore in this movie must have inspired every zombie movie after it, including Dawn of the Dead itself. Gore rarely gets me, but the ripping of the tit was enough to make me flinch.

Can anyone recommend films that come close to this one in atmosphere and suspense?

Hello there,

glad you liked this movie, i must say that i saw this when it was first released in the 70s, and i have never forgotton it, so you could say it made quite an impact on me then, although the version i saw back then, was heavily edited, so i was really pleased when Anchor Bay released it uncut and bought it straight away.

Anyway, you were asking about other films to watch, have you seen any of these movies.

Lucio Fulci's The Beyond

Dario Argento's Phenomena

other good films are:

Suspiria

Deep Red

happy film hunting

I absolutely loved "The Beyond". Went through a series of Lucio Fulci movies: "Zombie Flesh Eaters", "Zombie Flesh Eaters 2", "The City of the Living Dead" and "The House By The Cemetery", but "The Beyond" was definitely the best.

Interesting you should pick "Phenomena" from Argento's films. I haven't seen any of them yet. Why did you point out that one for special mention?

reply

My guess would be the otherworldly nature of the film. And the fact that in 'PHENOMENA' the forces at work were NOT just a deranged killer as in most of Argento's films.

There also is an overall impending mood of doom to the film; a feel that dark forces are at work.

Perhaps that is why...

I have over 5000 films, many of them very rare and OOP. I LOVE to trade. PLEASE ASK!

Yea, I was amazed by the quality of the movie was well.
I expected it to be much worse, with the usual horrible over the top acting, but it suprised me.

Underrated for sure.

Zombi 2 (lucio fulci) one of my fav zombie movies of all time.

I'd recommend 'Who can kill a child?'...Not zombies but a great spanish children gone bad film.
also....
'Deep Red'
'Repulsion'
'City Of The Living Dead'
'Don't Torture A Duckling'
and from the new wave....(circa 2007 and upwards)
'Inside'
'Mum And Dad'
and 'The Children'
....'Martyrs' was overrated in my books but you may like.

Jorge Grau also did a couple other horror flicks...mostly poo but there was a kind of home invasion film he did in the early eighties(?) which was okay (features an unforgettable 'burning bush' sequence...if you've seen it,you'll know what i mean)....aye

This movie is good...but a list of Zombie movies I like better include Night Dawn and Day of the dead. Zombie 2, Dead Alive, Cemetary Man. Return of the Living Dead, and Shaun of the Dead

I usually hate zombie films from the 70s and 80s. But this was really enjoyable! I don't know if I saw a cut version but the gore wasn't OTT and only showed enough for you to know what was happening. I was absolutely gutted when Edna, Katie and George all died as I liked them and I thought it was tragic. But the end was so apt and funny! I give this a solid 8/10.

I enjoy this film as well. The scenery and atmosphere give it a Gothic, classy feel and it reminds me of the classic Hammer films. This is the second time I've seen it and it didn't lose any of the impact with repeat viewings.

It really surprised me too. Outstanding film. Instantly became one of my all time favorites.
