(Yet Another ) Criterion candidate

This post's title says it all. Although there are a lot of films viewers want to see Criterionized, this one 1) was once a laserdisc release of their's (it has taken them time to acquire many such titles, but they got them) and 2) they definitely have a thing for Kurosawa's films.
I don't like Criterion for their selection, really, but more so for the presentation. They always try to get the directors/film makers involved and for the most part have trye to restore many of their movies. I would also be happy if anybody else released a R1 edition better than the Kino Video edition, which I will never buy.
Criterion encourages suggestions for possible film titles, which I have done for this movie. If there is anybody who knows of another DVD company which welcomes suggestions, please let me know

reply

Yes, of course. Eagerly waiting to see the CRITERION presentation of DERSU UZALA. I expect to get rich bonus features too.

<<<Criterion encourages suggestions for possible film titles>>>

Is there a place on their site where they state a place where customers can suggest titles? Because I wouldn't hesitate to suggest this one.

reply

Okay, I am now possitive that they do. I had not realized that they have a new site (or I just never saw it before).

So here is a quote directly from the Q/A section of their site:

--------------------------------------

Does Criterion accept ideas and suggestions from fans?

Absolutely! If you have any requests or suggestions for Criterion, please feel free to e-mail them to our own Jon Mulvaney.

(The email, by the way is, [email protected])

Do you think CRITERION dvds are a little bit overrated?

+ "Lots" of content (though usually as much as an average special edition release)
+ Beautiful presentation.
+- Different versions of the film avaiable (unless you are deep into researches, you usually watch only one of them).

but

-VERY VERY expensive!!!
+-3 discs? But two contains different versions of the film.
-English-ONLY subtiles

And most of all :

-Average or poor restoration of several movies.

Criterion DVDs aren't over-rated. They are a botique item. They are aimed at a group of people who will pay premium price for premium quality. They are aiming at an audience who truly are cinemaphiles. Not your typical movie lover who claims to love film but when you ask them about "Dr. Strangelove" they go and say "I've never heard of that."

First off, while many major brands have as many extras as a typical criterion release (or sometimes more), 99% of the time, Criterion extras are actually worth watching and aren't just fluff pieces. You know, they actually provide real content, not just "Wow, this was a fun movie to make. I respect the work of all my costars!"

Secondly, Criterion is aimed for the cinemaphile, not your standard 'movie-fan.' So, thus, alternate versions are interesting to this group because often times it creates a very different film, like in Brazil.

Now, name one movie of theirs that don't even feature the original language as an audio option. I have never heard of this elusive DVD that breaks the general rule of a criterion release.

Also, Criterion restorations are amongst the best in their classes. I don't know what films you are mentioning. However keep in mind - many films you may be speaking of may look bad until one considers the quality of the original stock. At some point, you are limited by the quality of the stock you have recieved.

The only point you have is English only subtitles.

reply

Yes I agree with you fully. Criterion is not for every one. There supplements are among the best or the best for any company. And as for the quality of there films go to WWW.dvdbeaver.com and click on dvd comparisons. It compares dvds to other. Most of the Criterion collection is there. They have pictures from each version of the dvd. It is unbelivable how good some of criterions films look to others.

reply

Absolutely. It is my favourite film of all time and still do not have it on DVD...but I will wait it out with my VHS copy.

world war three, I'm gonna grab me a girl and go and *beep* her, yeah-yeah world war three

reply

Um....Lets keep this thread alive, because Im am dying to get this on criterion. Really I am, and I will if I have to, but I dont feel like wasting my time of vhs with innaccurate subtitles.

reply

I'm the same way. I've got all of Kurosawa's Criterion films and would love to see a version for this movie!

There's a new Region 2 version of this film due for release on 26th Feb 2007 by the Artificial Eye Film Company Ltd.

That said: I too would prefer to buy a Criterion release.

reply

The new Artificial Eye edition looks to be a copy of the RusCiCo and Spectrum (Korea) releases. The extras (which are interesting, but spartan) are identical to the new AE release, and, worse, the quality of the video is no better than the awful Kino version. So I'd wait for a review before buying the AE Region 2 disc.

P.S. Judging from the clue in Criterion's last newsletter, I think they're going to release Chris Marker's "Sans Soleil" this year!

I am a satisfied Criterion customer, It's the most expensive DVD I own, Ugetsu, a Kenji Mizoguchi film, Great film, and hard to find in Australia anyway,

There is no film I would rather see released by Criterion. There is a poor-quality DVD out there, but it washes out the colors of this spectacularly beautiful film so much that my VHS copy is still the best print. But I once tried to show the VHS copy to a class with a projector and again the colors were washed out. I would LOVE a Criterion DVD with a great, restored print! This is one of my absolute favorite films.

reply

I recommended it to them a few years back. I remember reading somewhere on these boards that Kino holds the rights for DVD and are not interested in sharing. No doubt in my mind that Criterion would release this film if they could. They must have a dozen other Kurosawa, including his only other film that won the Oscar for best foreign language film: Rashomon.

DRUNKEN ANGEL! Now a soon to be Criterion Release. If I'm not mistaken, this as well as Dersu Uzala were past Criterion laser-discs. Maybe the upcoming arrival of Drunken Angel is a hint of things to come.

Email I got from Criterion rep a couple of months ago:

Hi there,

To the best of my knowledge, we do not have plans for “Dersu Uzala” at this time. Title suggestions are always welcome though, so thanks for your email!

Sincerely,

Tamara

Standard PR flack response from someone who can only repeat that which has already been announced, and nothing more.

What more can I say, buddy - we live in a stupid and cruel world for movies. Scores of ordinary movies released on blu ray and criterion but none of Dreyer's and only some of Tarkovsky's and Bresson's?? None of Makavajev's and Paradjanov's either. And the commonplace Hollywood products are getting theirs almost too easily. OK, I am not saying that 'all' of them are bad, some are good and others are too good but why masterpieces of world movies made by true auteurs are neglected? This must be beyond anybody.
