181-minute Soviet version

I saw this version 20 years ago in Spain.

It's magnificent!

It's a pity no one wants to release it in a proper HD transfer...

The 181-minute version of 'Dersu Uzala' was screened in the former Soviet Union only. As you know, the Russians produced this film.

Take a look at 'The Emperor and the Wolf', by Stuart Galbraith IV, for more details...

I saw it many years ago, but I remember it took much longer for Dersu to build the hut when he and Arsenev were isolated. This sequence was more harrowing than the one included in the short cut.

Here you find proof of the longer running time: http://www.sfi.se/en-gb/Swedish-film-database/Item/?itemid=8333&type=MOVIE&iv=PdfGen

Wow I wish I could see that because I think that Dersu building the grass shelter in the howling gale is one of the greatest scenes in motion picture history.

I went there but where is the proof of the longer running time?

Actually I don't see how lengthening that scene could have made it better. I thought it was perfect the way it was. I would love to see this film in super high quality.

Look again. It says:

"Other showing: 1976-01-05 Sovjetunionen 181 minutes".

reply

Yes, Alcar, you are right. And the version they are selling now is only 143 minutes. 38 minutes missing from one of the greatest films ever made! Not only that but the DVD quality is not that great.
