better ending? *spoilerish*

...even though im pretty sure only a handful of people ever look this movie up....

i think it would have been a better movie if edward had turned out to be andrew's son who somehow escaped the killing or something...it would have had to have been worked in somehow, but at least it would explain why he looked so much like edward, and it would have been a good twist.

thoughts?

Even though it's been a long time since you've posted your comment:
I think it's a good idea. Now that you mention it, I quite forgot about Edwards resemblance with Andrew at the end. But you're right, that's it's somehow a loose ending without an explanation.
And was Edward really a patient of the mental institution or was it just something Dr. Mandeville made up to disturb him even more and weaken his mind? It's hard to imagine why he should be effected that much if he hadn't got any connection with the family or if his mind wasn't in a weakened condition in the first place.

"You shouldn't keep souvenirs of a killing. You shouldn't have been that sentimental."

It's been even longer since you've posted your comment, but traffic moves very slowly on this board. You raise an excellent issue: Dr. Mandeville may have just been manipulating Edward in his fragile state. That never occurred to me while watching this, but it makes perfect sense because Mandeville was constantly scheming.

It had occurred to me gradually how much Edward resembled Andrew, until finally I realize Andrew was just Edward with a moustache.

It's too bad this film is so obscure, because it's a decent potboiler with strong performances and a terrific cast. It veers into soap operatics at times, but I found it very entertaining. 7/10 stars from me.

***SPOILER ALERT***
This is the longest amount of time between comments thusfar, but here I go anyway. What you have suggested plynne687 would not have been better, as I like the film as it is. And I must say, and this is what compels me to write anything, that this film is thoroughly misunderstood. This is not a ghost story. This is a story about a couple of insane people who evidently were both residents and friends in an insane asylum... those people being Edward Foster, and Andrew Marr. Unfortunately, this is just one of those films that are commonly misinterpreted, and therefore does not get the credit it deserves.
