Cybill was too old for this role.

I am not saying that she was too old for a person (she had a good look for 'Taxi Driver' 2 years later). She was too old for the character.

Daisy was a younger girl. This day, she would have been in high school. Cybill didn't fit into this. She was already past full grown.

A younger actress should have been chosen.

Yet, it's good to date the director; yes? LOL

Well, I don't know. I think she looked young enough. If she looked much younger, it would have been rather creepy.

By the way, James never actually gave Daisy's age in the story. I always imagined her as being in her late teens. Cybill may have been older than that when this was filmed, but I think she passed for that age well enough.

(If she looked much younger, it would have been rather creepy) <--You need to see more movies. LOL Besides, I never said 'early' teens.

Cybill did not look like she was in her teens, at all.

We'll just agree to disagree.

Watching this, it never ocurred to me that Shepherd was too old to play a young American heiress. She looks about 19 or 20, but if the other characters had said she was 18, it wouldn't have jarred me.

I guess it could have made the title character come across as more of an "innocent victim" if she were obviously younger and inexperienced, though. I don't think this movie is very emotionally crafted, though, so I don't think Peter B. would have emphasized that aspect, even if working with an even younger actress.

I guess 'I' just find the story emotional.

I do consider Daisy to be a victim.

Daisy is a victim. How old is she supposed to be anyway? Around 16 maybe?

I think something like that.

Cybill Shepherd was actually OLDER than Barry Brown, (who, as Frederick Winterbourne, was supposed to have been in his late 20s); I believe that she was 23 when she played the part of Daisy Miller.

And yes, she was ABSOLUTELY WRONG for the part. Having read the novella,
I realize that Daisy Miller was supposed to have been about 17 years old,
a little nouveau riche who had not been reared properly, and thus incurred
the wrath of the American expatriate society in Switzerland for her undue
"independence" (which was mistakenly perceived by others as "wantonness.")

There were other considerations that rendered Cybill Shepherd inappropriate
for the part(mainly, her inadequate acting ability) but mostly, she was simply
TOO OLD to have interpreted the part effectively.

Yes I believe Cybill was too old. Winterbourne couldn't figure out if Daisy was innocent or not. It's usually not such a mystery for a full grown woman. I thought she was too tall, too, and too shrill and frenetic. Otherwise her acting was very good (timing, motions, glances, etc).

I didn't care much for Mrs. Miller in the book and imagined her to be dowdy and introverted, but Cloris Leachman was an improvement. I liked her better or at least felt more sympathetic.

Randolph was annoying in the book and even more annoying in the movie.

Winterbourne, his aunt, Mrs. Walker, and Gionavelli were about right.

Eugenio was too serious and brooding.

The scenery and setting were perfect.
