Hopefully it gets a blu ray release.

I mean, it's a miracle it's even coming to DVD, but on the cover it says "remastered in high definition". I really hope it gets a blu ray release.

Then again, I want all his films on blu ray.

Etiquette Pictures, the sister company of Vinegar Syndrome, will be releasing COONSKIN on Blu-ray. I believe it was originally slated for "late 2015" but EP's site only remarks that the release date is TBD. I've contacted them to request more info, but I've yet to get a response. Still, it's heartening even to have it vaguely promised.

There is currently a region-free Blu from Germany, but the Etiquette release will be a brand-new scan and - I imagine - a much better-looking release.

I'll let you know if I hear anything back!

Still no movement on this. I'm copying from a post on blu-ray forum by SpaceBlackKnight in August of 2023 that gives a good summary.

Here's the story with Coonskin. Paramount had co-financed it and was set to release it theatrically. Several failed attempts to get an R from the MPAA and protests at the Gulf+Western building (due to it's racial content) gave them second thoughts.

Paramount sold US distribution rights to Bryanston, who had cut it down from 99 mins to a more marketable 83 and did other changes to get an R rating. Paramount still had some overseas distribution rights and released the 99 min version in places like Italy.

The current copies out there are the 83 min US version, as that was what the film element Xenon (who purchased distribution rights from Bryanston) has on hand. It's widely believed Paramount may still have the 99 min OCN or a interneg as they released it in some countries through CIC.
