At the beginning of the movie, he had no phone. Then he has a phone all of a sudden. Why? If he was as paranoid as he seemed to be, and considereing the business he was in, I can see why he wouldn't have one. He didn't seem to have much of a personal life. Why bother?

He did have a phone. He called the landlady about the bottle of wine and the fact that she knew his age from reading his mail.
shareMaybe he usually kept it unplugged, but really that wouldn't be good explanation because then he would had to plug the phone in before calling. So he just didn't want to tell people what his phone number is and thats so weird, what did he use the phone for if not even for the girlfriend. He was just clinging to the idea of being paranoid.
