Pretty Dull and Sloppy

Yes, there are a few good scenes but the film is a waste of time. Gene Hackman played his dull character too well and the plot itself had too many holes covered by the usual "Was he hallucinating??/Is there really a bug?/Was Duvall really murdered?/Was it all a dream????" crap.

Blow-up was a much better film. The Conversation is a Coppola misfire, although not as bad as One From The Heart.

As for all the multiple theories about where the bug is at the end of the film, get over it. Coppola himself doesn't know or likely care.

No./ Yes./ Yes./ No.

What in the world would lead you to ask those questions? Nothing in the movie even alluded to that. It was pretty straight forward and not left to viewer's imagination. You are looking for, and seeing, something that isn't there and wasn't intended to be there.

I agree it was dull.

if it wasn't all a dream, then it makes no sense for duvall not to bring a bodyguard or a weapon to the room. he would also be on guard for anything.
if it was a dream, it's a cop out.
So, which is it? Bad writing, or a cop out?
