Harrison Ford's performance

Did anyone find his performance hilarious? Reading his interview in this month's empire it all makes sense now. The campery, the clothes. I guess it all added to the creepiness of the character

reply

I haven't seen it yet, but why funny?

"That wasn't flying, that was........falling with style"

reply

I liked it a lot. He's most well known for his macho, action hero type performances in Star Wars and the Indiana Jones movies, but I gotta say, I really like him in roles like this and in Blade Runner.

Sorry, Maury. I'm not a gymnast.

Harrison Ford did the best acting in this movie.

I found in a lot of ways Harrison was actually ahead of his time in his portrayal of gay character. He clearly was admanant about not making him flamboyant, which is interesting because in the seventies gay characters were usually way over the top. I sometimes wish HF had made more movies with FFC, maybe a starring role - BR or possibly Mosquito Coast is about the closest we'll see to that.

Offering a cookie is code for anal sex. When Harry Caul sniffed the cookie and then put it down is code for rejecting anal sex.

Put simply:

Offering cookies = asking for anal sex

Sniffing and putting down said cookie = rejecting anal sex.

Just re-watched that scene, it is a bit peculiar. LOL.

reply

I didnt even get he was gay. I just thought what a handsome very young man who looks lot like Harrison Ford.

reply

That's because he's not

Mr. Wint in Diamonds are forever immediately came to mind. I think the slimy duo he is half of are supposed to be gay?

LOL

How's he gay? They don't mention him being gay at all. This is hilarious.

I think this performance is great. He kind of reminds me of Luke Lucas in APOCALYPSE NOW.

reply

I believe the original poster was saying that this was revealed in a magazine
interview with Harrison Ford.

And if I remember it well, on one of the two DVD commentaries.

My thoughts, exactly.

Jack's not dead! Jack would never die without telling me, first!

reply

Yeah does anyone have the article where it's cited his character is gay ?

reply

Ford's character was very clearly gay from the get go. The first time he met Caul he told him he had made Christmas cookies. What could be more gay? Inviting him to have a cookie is also a euphemistic invitation to anal sex.

reply

I like how Harry, in that scene, is even paranoid about the cookie he so gingerly picks up.

Good thing they don't know about the 'cookies = anal sex' rule, then!

But seriously, folks: I'm with those praising Ford's performance. He was admirably subtle (and menacing).

It's not easy to be menacing when you have few (or no?) close-ups. But Ford managed it.

Or DO they?! I haven't been invited to a block party in eight years!

Now his performance makes sense but YEA the cookies!!! lol should have caught that.

You Suck...now deal with it.

reply

Wow, I never realized pastry chefs are all gay.

reply

I adore Ford's performance in this, I actually wish he had a few more scenes, he was perfect here. And, gay or not, he was hot!
