Lucrezia Borgia's hair

Does anyone know what's up with Lucrezia Borgia's hair being twisted into a ponytail-beard underneath her chin? Was this at all common at the time? I'm assuming it's a stab at androgyny, but would welcome anyone else's thoughts.

Hahah omg when I saw it I started laughing. I think it was probably an absurd idea and Mr Director just went with it. The whole scene was so bizarre; I still don't know quite how to process it.

I think it kept getting more absurd by the minute
