One of my favorite films

Delightful, often funny, sometimes quite moving. The great Madge Sinclair is magisterial. Hume Cronyn is perfect as Conrack's bete noire. The kids are terrific.

And then there's Voight's performance. A perfect example of a superb actor fully embodying the role at hand. I've seen most of Voight's work on film, and have also seen "Conrack" many times. Yet he isn't immediately recognizable here, because he disappears into the part:)--

Just read "The Water is Wide" for the first time, and I recommend it highly as well:) --

Thanks for the recommendation of the book. I need to seek out Pat Conroy's/Conrack's/Patroy's "The Water Is Wide." Jon Voight did a terrific job of portraying him in this film, and it deserves to be better known. 9/10 stars from me.
