Certainly my favorite teacher film, though "To Sir, With Love" is excellent also. "Conrack" is entirely relevant today with its themes of racial disparity, economic opportunity and cultural expectations. Too bad these themes are no longer considered desirable by filmmakers.

Yes and No. The part of teaching the kids life lessons - yes. The part where he gets let go because of the town politics - no. Things have not change, and not just about race. Anyone who goes against the grain for any reason as a teacher gets stomped upon by the bureaucrats.

Such a heart warming movie. He should have been a little less in your face though with that arrogant superintendent though. Might have been able to teach a little longer.
