its a good movie and makes sense, i can appreciate it, compared to the poor pro black crap today which makes blacks look like inept, thugs and unintelligent, yes the ones with bernie mac and tracy morgan... earl jones is quite compelling here...
Congratulations on being color-blind and touting your total lack of racism. If all you saw was a movie about a single mother, you are missing out. This movie was supposed to be reflective of black culture in the 1970s, and the main characters being black was very important. I know this specifically because my African-American studies class was assigned to watch this to learn about these themes. Also something we've learned in that class is the rise of "color-blindness", which assumes that if we are not color-blind, then we must automatically be racist. One can acknowledge race and the issues concerning that race without being prejudiced in any sort.
"This movie was supposed to be reflective of black culture in the 1970s, and the main characters being black was very important. I know this specifically because my African-American studies class was assigned to watch this to learn about these themes." I am wary of people claiming to know everything about being black or any ethnic or social group because of a class. This may be more reflective of low-income black culture in big cities like New York City, and should not be considered a characterization of all black people even in the '70s. There was a middle class, just like anyone else. I grew up in a household with none of these issues and neither did my relatives. Contrary to movie-programmed popular belief, all black people aren't and were not always struggling over everything and having little crises while spouting race-related dialogue in their everyday lives. While this movie is less of the so-called "blaxploitation" of the time and the actors speak favorably about it, now its script really smites of overt stereotyping by its white writers.
FYI, all black films aren't about thugs, drugs and other things----start looking for other films that aren't even about that---thanks for stereotyping all black films, even though they're not all about the same thing.
Hmmm, let's try: A RAISIN IN THE SUN SERGEANT RUTLEDGE THE HELP THE LEARNING TREE (Gordon Parks actually produced, directed, scripted, edited and wrote the music) ROOTS & ROOTS:THE NEXT GENERATIONS (OK, not movie-movies, but good enough) Most Spike Lee films, except maybe CLOCKERS KANSAS CITY BUCK AND THE PREACHER MAN AND BOY (a "Bill Cosby Western" so obscure I've only seen it once) DUEL AT DIABLO (not exactly a "black movie," but Sidney Poitier's first Western) STORMY WEATHER CABIN IN THE SKY RED BALL EXPRESS

The key word here is "today". Most of the movies that you've named are from yesteryear or another time period and generation.
