Impossible to make nowadays

Chinatown would be impossible to make now, at the scale and released as wide as it was. It's too adult and too idiosyncratic.

I can't see it being done well as a TV series either... All the mystery would be explained away and the atmosphere and mood of the film would suffer...

Film culture really has been infantilised... I'm optimistic though, that we'll still see filmmaking for adults, it'll just be at a much smaller scale and niche.

If something as surreal and polarizing as "Mother" can get a wide release there's still hope for the art house crowd yet.

That's the truth.

You just have to put 'Rosemary's Baby' and it's remake side-by-side ... it's a pretty depressing divide between storytelling in the 1960s and modern times.
