Why was Carla being punished?

Carla: "I danced on a Sunday."

Sounds like she did something blasphemous. Can anyone explain to me what wrong did she do?

She probably just lived in super religious area where dancing in Sunday was indeed forbidden. In Maria Chapdelaine, a 1913 novel by Louis Hémon, Catholic heroine thinks that dancing is "impure" and if I remember right, in a 1925 book The Ancient Highway by James Curwood, it is mentioned that Pope has forbidden dancing. Puritans forbade it, too.

It wasn't just the church. Dancing on a Sunday was widely frowned upon until relatively recently. There's a common folklore motif where standing stones are explained as being people who had danced on a Sunday and been turned to stone by a mysterious piper who turned out to be the Devil, or some variation thereof. Carla got off lightly!
