Haven't seen this in decades. Can someone provide spoilers for me?

First of all, I'm really surprised that this one gets so little notice & doesn't illicit more comments than it does here. If I remember correctly, it was a fairly popular film back in the day.
I never saw it during it's theatrical run, but I recall it playing quite frequently ( in truncated form of course... ) on network TV back in the late '70s - early '80s. First during prime time, then I believe it became a regular staple on the old CBS LATE MOVIE. Anyone else remember that?
Although I've never gotten to see the uncut R rated version, one thing I do remember vividly is watching it for the first time during it's debut on Canadian television ( living in Buffalo, NY we're blessed with all the Toronto stations ) & then watching it about a week later when it first appeared on US network TV & being amazed at the difference in the amount that was cut out. It was almost like watching two different movies!
From what I remember seeing on CTV not a whole lot was cut out, if it was a "hard" R like what I imagine it theatrically, it was only trimmed down to a mild R or a "rough" PG-13 by today's standards. While on the otherhand, the version that was shown on US television was severely cut to no more than a PG level. There were bleeps & "jump" cuts all over the place! LOL

I wish they would release it on DVD. Hell, I haven't even seen or heard of a showing on cable. Not anytime remotely recent anyhow...

As it's been decades since I've seen it, much of my recollections of it have faded as you can imagine. For instance, I can't recall if Buster's friends actually physically force Billie into sex or if she does so out of fear ( obviously, it was rape either way though ). And I can't recall how she dies. Or if he actually kills his friends.
I remember him going to the pool hall & brutally beating them, but that's all.
Can anyone out there fill me in on what I've forgotten?
Thanks.
Jeez, I hope someone actually winds up seeing this post...

They raped Billie and when she hit one of them, he choked her to death. Later, Buster killed two of them and injured the others.

I remember Buster attacks Billie's killers at the pool hall & beats one with a poolstick, but did he beat another with a ball? Then it ends with an announcement that he'd escaped from jail(I think) and had dug up someone's flower garden & was taking the flowers to Billie's grave. I haven't seen this movie in almost 20 years--it used to come on late Saturday night on Nashville's ABC channel 2.

Buster did attack her killers at the pool hall, killing one with a poolstick and beating the one who actually killed her to death with a ball. He didn't escape from jail though. He was released on bail (guess the law wasn't so strict in the 40's) and dug up people's flowers and took them to her grave. I loved this movie, but the last twenty minutes are very difficult to watch.

I'll have to see it again, but my take on the very ending was that Buster was awaiting sentencing when he dug up the flowers and took them to the grave. He wasn't even in jail yet. I agree about the last 20 minutes. When Billie is first pursued by the boys who eventually kill her, she's writing Buster's name in the dirt. I wish the movie could've moved on from that point to a happier ending.

Hi, I have this movie on video and just watched it recently. The reason it was a "hard" R is because of the full frontal nudity of Jan Michael Vincent. It wasn't a close-up or pornographic. It was when they were going skinny dipping. They show a little bit of Joan Goodfellow. But, at the time, and yes, I was alive in 1974, it was very risky for an actor to show his privates. Even then, actresses may have brifly showed their chests and perhaps rears, but never males, only male behinds and that was rare.

They did force Billie to have sex and she kept fighting back. In fact, the guy gets mad at her for hitting him and chokes her, which is how she dies.

He does kills two of his friends. He finds them in the pool hall and they act suspicious. One of them he blasts across the face with a pool cue. He sees the other one with scratches on his face and beats him, I think with a pool ball, but don't quote me on that. The others attack him. But he beats them too. Only the two die however.

Buster is in jail and gets out on bond. In fact, the police officer in the jail is sympathetic to him. One police officer asks if he let Buster out to go to her funeral. He says no because bail hadn't been set yet. Only Buster's parents and the preacher were there, not even her own parents went to Billie's funeral. The policeman says he doesn't know what he himself would do if a bunch of guys raped and killed his girl. Then two phone calls come into the sheriff's office - two people complaining that their flower beds were all torn up. Buster has filled the back of his pickup truck with flowers to bring to Billie's grave. It's quite touching.

What really struck me about this movie was the actions of Buster's friend Whitey. Whitey was homelier than a hedge fence and kind of ignorant. But Buster has obviously taken him under his wing for many years. When Whitey gets shot down by a girl, Buster builds him back up again. Whitey spends the night at Buster's house and is really taken in by Buster's whole family. Buster takes him to the sea. Although not rich, Buster always seems to have a little money, he is the best looking kid in school and is very popular. But he is also very kind and you see that in his relationship with Whitey. Whitey, however, turns on him when it comes down to getting sex. That, to me, was almost the worst thing. Let this be a lesson to all you young girls out there - guys will say or do just about anything to get sex - even betray a lifelong buddy! There seems to be no honor in teenage boys! :-) Except for guys like Buster! So, look out for a Buster and forget all the rest! But, even Buster's intentions toward Billie were less than honorable in the beginning.

...until you become middle-aged, then the tables turn. It's the women who will stop at nothing for sex, with the guy trying to protect his reputation. As homely as I am, even I've experienced this from desperate middle-aged women! All they want from you is sex... or money. Neither of which I'm inclined to provide. :p

Timmy Son, sound like a definite Woman Hater to me, It's real sad and shameful that you think of Woman like that. Sure there's a large amount of females that are 'Bad News', so common sense will tell you that if a Woman gives you any type of trouble, while you're with her, move on to the next Lady. For me, Womankind is the greatest gift that the Great Lord has given Mankind, except for Salvation which is first and foremost!

This was written years ago but I thought it was very touching.
