born innocent now on dvd- rape scene intact

Fans of the film will be glad to know that Vci Entertainment recently put out the dvd for "Born Innocent"
I gave the film a look, it's been awhile. It still holds up very well.
The dvd contains the full version, with the rape scene intact. I remember in the 80s when this film played on TV the rape scene was taken out, therby pretty much ruining the entire flow of the picture.
VCI's transfer is pretty clean and well done when taken into consideration this telefilm is now 30 years old.
This film is definetly filed under the "They'll never make 'em like they use to" Category. Telepics today go nowhere near the grit and reality as they did back then. Born innocent is one of the best examples of television at it's most finest...and brutually honest.

Without sounding like a sick-o, without the rape scene its just not the same movie.
These movies were made to keep us kids outta detention centers and prisons and only one thought seems to REALLY keep people out of prison "Hey...there a good possibility I'll get raped in there!!!!"
The BORN INNOCENT rape scene is one of the worst rape scenes I've ever seen in a movie....its harrowing...because it HAS to be.

I hate to burst your bubble - but this was a TV movie. If you want to have it "intact" you'll have to add the commercials.

It's not like this was done before Linda Blair was famous or that her career was on the skids. There was a slew of TV movies on social problems of that era. They were pretty shocking for the time - but you're not going to find anything you wouldn't find on primetime tv.

reply

I REALLY don't think there would've been a commercial break during the rape scene...

"Guten Tag, ich will mein Leben zurück."

reply

That is stupid logic. Why would you have to have commercials to have the movie intact? The commercials weren't filmed with the movie.

reply

The fact is the rape scene would never make it on television now. The only way a movie like this could happen would be if it was made for cable. I remember watching this movie when it first aired and it made me sick to my stomach. I was very young and did not fully understand what was happening, but the pain on her face and the contempt on the other girls faces made it very difficult to watch.

The 70's had some amazing tv films like this one, holocaust and duel. The networks seem to have conceeded the movie of the week to cable and that it too bad. I guess it is cheaper to just show each episode of every tv series at least twice every year rather then airing something that is new and challangeing.

You are right. A 15-year-old girl being raped in prison would never be shown on prime time or any other time on network TV today - for so many reasons. The first being that is simply politically incorrect. The second is that today people do not want to see reality that gritty or close. No sponsor would dare to be connected with it because of the pc violations.

There is still an audience for this kind of stuff, but it is limited, so cable is the only way to see it. We live in an age that in many ways has more moral restrictions and fears than the Victorian Age. Not to upset anyone's treasured beliefs about how enlightened we are these days, but even though it is fashionable to think of the 40's 50's 60's and 70's as being repressed It is actually the opposite in some ways. They showed a lot more about reality then we will allow today.

I actually saw this on TV, back in 1974, I was 17, and it was a powerful movie, the rape scene is disturbing, but, IMHO, necessary to the plot. It's meant to show how bad it could be.

Of course, the do gooders come along, and because of a actual event, let's not blame the perpetrators, let's blame the movie! I am so sick of this "monkey see, monkey do" attitude, that all these up tight PC nutbars have stuck in their minds. There are LOTS of weird people, doing crazy things, the don't need a TV movie of the week to get them rolling!

Glad to see the the DVD version was released in full. Thumbs up to Vci Entertainment.

Everything about this movie should be a wake-up call to any young person who runs away from home...

Very powerful movie.

I swear I saw this on TV around 1982 with most of the rape scene intact. After watching the DVD I only noticed a few seconds more that I hadn't seen before.

reply

Yes, I've been thinking the same thing. It's been a while since I caught it on television so I can't remember exactly when but 1982 sounds about right. My memory is pretty vague, but I think the girls pin her down, the ringleader says something like "you're going to meet John" smiles in a mean way and thrusts the plunger, Linda Blairs characters screams while the girls have their hands over her mouth. We didn't have cable until much later in the 80's so it had to be regular television.

reply

I purchased the DVD for just eight bucks. It's a very solid quality transfer, but alas the extras are pretty skimpy. A Linda Blair interview and/or commentary would have been nice.

Q: What's the biggest room in the world? A: The room for improvement.

Does anyone know what Denny says to her at the end of the rape scene? I am hearing impaired and was dissappointed this movie isn't subtitled.

reply

It was something like: "Now you won't rat on us, huh?" I'll check my disc later and amend that line if need be!
I had a Dutch videotape of the movie years ago which was intact...but then again, the Dutch don't get shocked by much!

I only saw this film twice in the 1980s (I refused to watch it's original airing because it was too close to home --I had been sexually assaulted and could not bear it). Why did the girls attack her? Did they do it just t every new girl, or were they punishing her?
