Plot hole?

Enjoyed this movie. Great slice of 1970s nostalgia.

However, there is a plot problem. If the plan was to fake Tarrant's escape and then shoot him to prevent him talking and revealing that he had no connection to Drabble, why did they not just shoot the boy? Instead, they keep him alive in the windmill. What would be the point, as they already have the diamonds and the plan was for Tarrant to be dead anyway.

A good hostage can always come in handy, I suppose. Even if their plan had worked and Tarrant had been killed (which he wasn't), Julyan could have been exposed (something that actually happened) and lead the authorities to them. There are many possible scenarios.

And why didn't McKee shoot Tarrant when the latter escaped from the van that had just fallen off the road and instead stood there watching him running up the stairs? Didn't he want him dead? Wasn't that the reason they were chasing him after his release from the hospital? Maybe I missed something.
