Mostly dubbed? And other curious issues
I decided to show this film to my 9 and 11 year olds (probably too late in age), and I noticed - it really sounds like some 90% of the dialogue is dubbed. As if most of the audio recorded on location wasn't very good, and they did a major ADR session. Anyone notice that? It all sounds really canned and in the studio.
And speaking of audio, I used to simply adore the music by Euel Box, but now the main thing that truly dates this movie beyond measure, is the score. Well, some of the acting is deplorable too. And I don't mean to beat up on a movie that meant SO much to my childhood (if not more so with For The Love Of Benji), but for all the talking that Joe Camp did with family films and values, and all that stuff about making a true family film....kidnapping is quite disturbing, as well as gagging kids who cry their eyes out. I look at that stuff now, and am kinda blown away. I talk to my kids all the time about being careful because of crazy people in the world. And they show up in this otherwise beautiful G rated film....not to mention kicking a little dog at point blank range. Some of the stuff in Benji IMO almost garners a PG rating.
