But, I like Aki Kaurismaki

I finally saw this movie and immediately saw Fassbinder's influence on Kaurismaki (something he denies), but I just couldn't find a connection with the characters. I understood the prejudices, the nuances and every angle taken. I even appreciated the brilliant framing of nearly every scene, but for me, that's all there was. I'm not one who is so pretentious that I need familiar or even real actors, but I tend to have problems when people act so out of character (for humans), that everything is exaggerated. I almost felt was if I were watching mimes, but with speaking roles. I'm chalking this up to simply not being my style, which is weird, because I loved Kaurismaki's trilogy, with an incredibly similar acting/directing style, but with even less dialogue.

Which Kaurismäki trilogy? He's said to have a couple, both quite loosely defined. And I wouldn't really call the acting in those few Fassbinders I've seen that similar to Kaurismäki's ultra-deadpan approach.
