Oscar Nominations and wins

I'm not knocking this film, it's great, but how was it nominated for two years in a row?

I just came here to ask that very same question. Although it does not answer the question, I saw the following on Wikipedia: "Due to Academy rules at the time for foreign-language films (since changed), Amarcord competed in both 1974 and 1975."

Here's the answer:

Movies that are nominated for Academy Award must been released in Los Angeles in the year proceding the year that Award is given (for example - If the Award was given in 1970, the movie that was Awarded must been released in LA in 1969). Now Amarcord was created in 1973, but the American premiere, and LA releasing was 1974 - so the Academy nominated it in next, it is 1975, year.

Now, there's one exception from this rule - category "The best Foreign Language movie" - in this case, every country chose one movie and reports it to Academy, then the Academy choses the five best movies that were reported from all along the world.

And here's the answer - Academy has picked Amarcord the best foreign movie one year, and then, after the LA' premiere, it could be nominated in 'regular' (best direction, best screenplay etc) categories.
