What a treat it will be to see one of my favorite movies big, with an audience.

I saw this last night at my friend's urgency since it's probably his favorite film, and it proved that the big screen is where Fellini belongs. This was never a movie I considered great because of the over-abundance of juvenile humor and the lack of a center, but the film unfolds with a jubulent autobiographical sweetness that only a passionate filmmaker could have created. The images, like a typical Fellini female, are big and volumptuous and embracing and better savored in a theatre. It's a very good restoration for a good movie.

I see the re-release is rated R and I wonder why? I've never watched this film, is it violent at all?

It's not violent at all. I think it's rated R because of the scene where the voluptuous tobacconist exposes her huge breasts and she allows the teenage protagonist to suck on them. And he does. Feverishly.

I really agree with the OP about Cinema Paradiso stealing from this movie. Amarcord is a classic. It's a tragedy that Cinema Paradiso is such a popular movie and Amarcord is almost forgotten. Shame.
