something sweet

Simon ward is fantastic as James, captures the sense of a City boy made good in the beautiful country, allowing he has his heart set on a beautiful woman, Helen.
The hilarity is based mostly on the most english of englishmen, Anthony Hopkins, who is Sigfried. His relationship with his brother, Tristan is rather hysterical to say the least and is extrememly entertaining to watch.

I wish this could have been given its just deserts, but it seems it's
consigned to the rather independent british films of the 70s along with Hammer Horror, which is brilliant too.

god,i watch this film almost every week and i love it to death. THANK GOD IT WAS MADE!!!

Maybe I should see this film. Does it have the story, "Momentous Birth" in it, where James Herriot and Helen, before they are married, go to help a dog who's having trouble delivering her puppies?

And never forget today, that you are from...Old...Virginia!!!

Its a good, entertaining tv film but lost its impact because of the better known tv series and the actors who appeared in it.

Its that man again!!

I've just finished watching this on BBC2 and I have to say I enjoyed it far more than I did 30 years ago when all I could do was say "It's not as good as the series" which is an unfair comparison, since a film can never cover as much ground as a series.

But this time around, I was very taken with the quiet, un-showy, almost documentary feel of showing us some of Yorkshire life in the 30s. I liked the section where James & Tristan go out dancing at the local hall- it felt very natural and realistic, as well as all the bits shot on location at farming auctions (? I think?) and out in the fields. It was all very beautiful without feeling like a nostalgic, sentimental snapshot of a rural, bygone era. Even though that's clearly what it is!
