Jodie Foster

Wow, I really thought that she was a boy. Even after she told Tommy her name was "Audrey" I just thought it was a boy named Audrey or something. Only when she said her name was really "Doris" but she liked "Audrey" better did I start to think...could that be a girl???? I was amazed to see that it was Jodie Foster.

That is so funny. I knew it was her when I saw it but my friend had seen it before me. She said it is so funny because there is this little boy who dresses like a girl all the time and no one says anything about it. The entire movie I was waiting for this boy to show up dressed like a girl but then I realized she was talking about Jodie Foster.

I saw Jodie Foster's name in the opening credits, then it was surprising to see how much of a tomboy her character is; you could swear it was her twin brother (which she doesn't have). In fact, she's not so much a 'tomboy' in this film.. more like an actual boy: As "Audrey" she looks and sounds like every boy I went to elementary school with in the 1970s, even the haircut (except for the name "Audrey" of course). Maybe thats the way the character was written -after all, Tommy is a kind of oddball kid, and it would seem logical that he would become friends with another 'misfit'.

I thought it was a boy to all the time dressed in women clothing... and in the end I realized it was a girl! But she sounded like a boy, guess that's the thing that confused me.

Yeah, right, because all lesbians are masculine-looking... grow up. Her character is a tomboy and she played it very well. Was she a tomboy in "Taxi Driver"? Jodie's been a great actress forever, and yes she's lesbian, but can play anything and everything.

I was wondering why the hell a boy was wearing a dress in the film and they never mentioned why. As good as Foster is in other films, I'm going to say that was bad casting. She sounded way too much like a boy, acted like one, and looked a good deal like one too. This movie is stupid!

She was ALWAYS boyish. From the "Partridge Family", "Tom Sawyer", all
the way up to "Silence of the Lambs." She's just one of those gay
ladies who is masculine. Always has been. As great an actress as she
is, I have a hard time buying her as straight characters. It's the only
thing that hurts her as an actress. It's like trying to buy Paul Lynde
as a straight "dad" in "Bye, Bye Birdie." It doesn't work, talented as
both performers were/are.

Besides "Maverick", "The Silence of the Lambs" is about the only film of her's I have seen, not that I avoid or dislike her, I just miss a lot of films....

So putting these two together, I thought she did a great job of paying the rough and tumble agent in SOTL, as opposed to her role in "Maverick".

Anyway, I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought she was a boy, I missed the opening credits. Doris can be a boy's name but this is rare, (as the origins of this name in mythology comes from a female), I thought the character was perhaps put into some 'gender identity conflict' by being named "Doris' and changed his name to something prettier perhaps (????)

On the other hand I was thinking this might be a little "too modern" an idea for a film made in '74 :)

I must be just plain stupid but it never occurred to me for an instant that Paul Lynde was gay at the time of the release of Bye Bye Birdie. And I never thought of Jody Foster being a lesbian until rumors to that effect began to be widely circulated. Admittedly Paul Lynde is a flamboyant actor and personality but he is also totally unique. There was never any reason to think he was anything other than a rather eccentric and frazzled (straight) parent. The fact is it never occurs to me that any actor is gay until the fact becomes public knowledge.

Being homosexual seems to be more accepted nowadays since so many celebrities are coming out of the closet.

I never realized that Jody Foster is probably a lesbian until recently. I have always admired her acting and her professionalism. There have always been actors out there who like the publicity limelight and thrive on it. Jody has never been one of those stars. She has always kept herself very private.

There are way too many celebrities nowadays. Jody is a true actor.

I hope she stays that way.

Her haircut and clothes were just like a boy's when she first appears in the film. I thought it was a boy, too, even after she said her name was Audrey. I even thought Tommy was lying to his mom when he told her his friend was a girl! But the second time she appeared, I began to think that she had such an uncanny resemblance to Jodie Foster, I began to wonder if she could be related to her or something... until I realized that it WAS Jodie Foster. I think it was brilliant. The character was supposed to be a very boyish girl.

I loved her in this. She was one of the best child actors and managed to parlay that into a successful film career that is still thriving. The Little Girl Who Lives Down the Lane is a personal fave.

I immediately recognized her as Jodie Foster as soon as I saw her. Her facial features as so unmistakable.
