I HATE TOMMY!!!!!

I hated that annoying selfish arrogant rude little brat. How ungrateful, all his mom does is try and provide for him and all he does is complain. Best part of the movie is when he got spanked, wish I was the one doing it.

I don't feel sorry for his mom.
Chris was right, she's spoiling him. And some people on this board go on about how he's acting out because he lost his father, but he was like that before before he died. Maybe the mother was nice, but she did a poor job raising him.

I couldn't agree more. There may be some kids who are a natural menace and cannot be helped but they are few and far between. In my experience, when they're bratty, ungrateful, or rotten, it's the parents’ fault. They may have learned their bad behavior elsewhere but in those cases it's usually because they're filling a void their parents created.

In regards to being annoying, that's different. Tommy is a precocious child so he can be a little annoying at times. He requires a lot of attention but mostly he's bored and lacks direction and an outlet for his intelligence and energy. It was his mother's responsibility to make sure he had plenty of activities to keep him busy; which includes knowing how to entertain himself and how not to befriend whack-jobs like that Audrey.

Unfortunately his mother did him no favors by constantly indulging him. You hurt your child more when you don't discipline them because they'll grow up thinking that their behavior is acceptable when it's not.

reply

I totally agree. I was thrilled when he got whacked on the butt...AND when she threw him out of the car. He deserved far worse. The entire time I just kept thinking..."wow, what a little a-hole!"

What I loved about Tommy was that he seemed like a REAL kid, not like the uber-sophisticated brats on most modern shows and movies that throw out clever one-liners only a professional script writer could have come up with. I've known a lot of kids like Tommy. I even used to be a bit like him myself.

We'll see whose the filthiest person alive! We'll just see!

I quiet enjoyed his little spanking-he needed it a lot more than what he got, little brat.

I couldn't stand his little friend portrayed by Jodie Foster.

Thank God for this thread! It's cathartic to read that others reacted to Tommy as I did.

I just watched the movie, and found it annoying, with no sympathetic characters. But that kid was beyond the pale! Why are obnoxious child characters supposed to be funny or acceptable? I wondered why Kristofferson's David didn't see immediately that Alice was dragging a lot of baggage with that bratty kid, and steer clear of her.
