This movie was terrible. All Alice does is cry and get herself into miserable situations with abusive men. Her kid is a smartass already and she drags him around with her through all of this drama. I don't see any reason, whatsoever, why she won a best actress Oscar for this role.

shareIt's a shame that you can't recognize the brilliance of this great film. It's all about an ignorant, weak-willed woman who is suddenly on her own with her angry child and must find her footing as an independent woman. As such, it's not only among the best films on the subject (up there with Mazursky's AN UNMARRIED WOMAN) and is also one of Scorsese's very best offerings. Additionally, Burstyn's performance is absolutely stunning and was wholly deserving of that Oscar. Maybe you should avoid dramas? Just a thought.

I agree, it's kind of depressing to hear these negative comments. It make me wonder what is happening, or if this a normal cycle. Have people become that de=sensitized, or something else? I noticed also how the OP needed to say she "abused" by men; she was not abused, she happen to meet ONE abusive man for two days

I wouldn't say that Alice was ignorant, just a tad naïve maybe. She hadn't had an opportunity or wasn't courageous enough at the time of her marriage, to empower herself.

They gave her the Oscar for loosing the previous year because she lost to Glenda Jackson (in a comedy) for a very heavy dramatic film (Exorcist.)
Alice was not a nice person. She was at rock bottom, living in a hotel with an indulged little brat and treats her co-workers terribly. Sure, Flo did do a bit of a routine, but she didnt deserve how Alice treated her.
And she can't be single. No matter where (or at a very low point in life she) she always falls for a mans charms. Geez, just say no. They just want to sleep with you honey. You're 40. You know this.
She made her bed. She never left the abusive husband, presumably because she had no job skills. In the end she had to anyway so I guess it wouldn't have hurt to leave him, say 5 or 10 years earlier? She treated her son like a friend and he became a smart-ass just like his mother.
When that kid cussed out Alice's boyfriend (who had thrown him a birthday party at his house) I thought he did exactly the right thing. Alice's response..."You hit him! Oh, my God. This is the worst thing that could happen ever!"
And the kid is supposed to be "cute" ugh....
They made great movies in the 1970's but this is not one of them. And it won Best Picture at Bafta?
Oh yeah, Alice can't sing! Even in her autobio, Burstyn thinks she really can sing!

There is no reason to assume she lost the Oscar for the Exorcist, or was even the frontrunner. Alice was a not a nice person because why, she didn't like Flo and/or how did she treat her co-worker? You said co-worker(s). I didn't see her treat them badly.

She was 35 in the film actually, and since when do we not fall for a person's charms? People want companionship and a person to love. What does being at a low point in her life have to do with it? If anything, that would be the time. You didn't even understand the film, and likely never watched it in it's entirety
A character's personality and life choices bothers you and this is the basis to hate a film? Do you have to condone and agree with everything that's going on in a film before you like it?
