Why not just...


Captain Stacy is still alive after the crash, and conscious for at least some of the time. Why not keep him in the cockpit with Nancy - or at least near the cockpit - so that he can be right there to tell Nancy what to do?

Instead they leave him in the back, and forget that he's a valuable resource until it finally occurs to one of the stewardesses that they could ask him a single question.

In his barely conscious state, he could hardly verbalize anything, even when lying down. Other than blindness, it is never revealed if he had any other wounds but he most likely had some sort of other trauma to his head like a concussion. He was probably lucky to be alive.
