TITLE?

Have not seen this movie (yet). Can anyone explain the title? Thanx.

I'll quote another user:

"
By The Way -, 8 January 2004
Author: StSparky from Fukuoka Japan

The title refers to the now very old Ivory Soap claim of 99 and 64/100% Pure - and there is another "old" meaning for 'pure' that would be known to Frankenheimer and Dillon. It's another word for the material tanners would use in browning leather - dog turds. This should have been a clue to the humor to follow.

This is an interesting and odd film

Many thanks!

IBH27,
Tanners don't use dog turds; they use urine.

I saw this a long time ago and I may be wrong but my impression then was that it was a reference to Harry Crown's use of a "deadly" Magnum .44 for his hits.

You're wrong, all right. I remember the title of this movie was a big laugh when I was a youngster, because everyone-- and I mean EVERYONE-- was very familiar with the Ivory soap TV spots and their ponderous claim to being "99 and 44/100% pure."

I have no idea where a previous poster pulled the "64/100" figure... that has nothing to do with either soap ads or this movie title.

Well that was probably a typo by the author of that original quoted comment. Or there's an unexplained .20 % we need to be worried about.

Here is an explanation of why Ivory says that http://www.straightdope.com/classics/a4_157.html
(basically it is something they made up as a gimmick)

The ivory soap reference is correct. In 1973, As a teenager, I helped my uncle gather slot machines around LA for the opening scene. He had a script and I asked about the title and I learned of the Ivory reference. I hated the thought of my hero, Chuck Connors, playing a bad guy.
