any experts on the production? extras made for tv?

I watched the 26 original episodes when they were first shown in the 1970s and have seen them lots of time since and now have the dvd.

But there are so many extras on the dvd which seem to have been made near the time of the rest of the series that I don't recall seeing before.

Can anybody tell me were these extras were shown on tv or were they made later to make use of the footage?

IMDB and WIKIPEDIA allows me to answer my question,the extras were made in 1974 and 1975 and probably shown on tv then(this was before video and dvd remember).

These extras are not just thrown together from unused footage,indeed they are mostly interviews,such as a big interview in WAR TO PEACE with Stephen Ambrose who was unknown then.
