Practically All of Them Divorced

Been watching this classic every day now and for fun I looked up each couple here. Yikes, I would say 90 percent of them went on to divorce! Some soon after their appearance too. So far only Steve Allen/Jayne Meadows and Chad Everett stayed married til death, and Elaine Joyce and Bobby Van, who died about 5 years later. It's only up to the first year now, 1974, so there's plenty more to come. The couples I was most surprised about splitting were probably William Shatner, Dick Gautier, Orson Bean, and Cheryl Ladd.

Maybe the questions revealed something more...

If they are not divorced they are dead ( very depressing). Both Bert Convy and Bobby Van died from the same thing, brain cancer.

reply

It is true, most of the couples eventually divorced or split up (in the case of unmarried couples), or one or both died.

The only couples I think are still both alive, and still together are Vicki Lawrence & Al Schultz, and Patti Deutsch & Donald Ross.

I recently saw an episode from the 70's, and realized that the only person on the stage who is still alive, is Dick Gautier.

Jerry Stiller & Anne Meara were still together when she died this year.

Also Mary Ann Mobely and Gary Collins.

I was most surprised to hear Orson Bean and Carolyn got divorced, so long ago. I thought they were so compatible. Orson has been married to his 3rd wife Alley Mills (mom on The Wonder Years) for lots longer than he was married to Carolyn.

Dick Gautier is a doll.

Yeah I really thought Carolyn Bean was very cool. They keep showing the Joyce Bulifant episodes, and I was shocked to read that she and her husband at the time, Ed Mallory, actually divorced the year they were on the show, 1974! GMAB. And yes, so many tragic deaths from these guests, Meredith MacRae is on this week, was pregnant here and died so young too of cancer also. Alejandro Rey, what a handsome man. Too many losses.

I was disappointed to learn that Orson and Carolyn didn't endure, but I still enjoy watching them on the show. I recently read an interview that Orson gave back in the late 90's, where he said that they had an open relationship during their marriage (his idea) and that they experimented with LSD. From watching the show, I got the impression that he was more in love than she was, but after he married Ally he basically said that Ally was the love of his life.

I was sorry to learn that his mother committed suicide when he was sixteen, that must have been a heavy trauma to carry through life. I'm glad that he has found happiness with Ally. Incidentally, I didn't realize that he was the father-in-law of the late political columnist, Andrew Breitbart.

I found this recent picture of Orson and Carolyn, not sure of the date, but not too long ago. So nice to see them together all these years later,

Oh nice pic, obviously a grandson's college graduation, must be the son of the writer who passed so suddenly a few years ago.

reply

I think I saw Orson do the "coke nose" gesture to either Bert or Bobby a couple of months ago on Buzzr. If he did LSD I'm sure he did other drugs like cocaine as well.

Shall we play a game?

A bit of Tattletales trivia. You mention Joyce Bulifant & Ed Mallory, who divorced.

Ed went on to have a long marriage with one of his Days Of Our Lives costars, which lasted until his death.

Joyce got married 2 more times, first to Bill Asher, ex husband of Elizabeth Montgomery. Then, to Roger Perry, ex husband of Joanne Worley, who he appeared on Tattletales with!

Watching an episode now with James Brolin and his first wife (Josh's mom) Jane Agee; they divorced in the mid-80s but remained friends. Sadly Jane died in a car crash in 1995.

Also on the same episode are the very cute couple Patti Deutsch and Donald Ross, who are happily still married to this day.

Yeah, they're dead, they're...all messed up!

This week I am seeing Bob Crane and his wife Patti, and it is fascinating to know that he was later murdered. Patti died of natural causes just a few years ago.

It is not possible to see them then, and know now what was happening.

Elena Verdugo and her psychiatrist husband were still married when he died in 2012. She is 90 years old now.

Yesterday I saw Jessica Walter and her then husband Ross Bowman. Even though it was the 70's, he had a lousy haircut. She wore a pair of bell-bottom pants with a halter top.

If that doesn't scream "70's!" then nothing does.

The show also had Lyle Waggoner and his wife Sharon, who are still together today.

Gee Woodle, Space Kadoodle!

I was shocked to read that Pat Harrington and his wife divorced after like THIRTY YEARS! And he married a woman 25 years younger. What a shame.

Big time midlife crisis!

A lot of these Tattletales couples were on the show with their second spouses and most of them didn't even last.

I guess it's different when you're a celebrity, but I don't think I could stand the emotional toll of serial marriages and divorces like some of these people did. I have been married to my husband for over 28 years and I would be completely devastated if we divorced now. The last thing I would be looking for is hubby number two, but I'm also not rich and famous with gorgeous men throwing themselves at me either. Guys like Pat Harrington, William Shatner, Robert Culp, and Glenn Ford could grow old and gray and still have beautiful, younger women at their beck and call simply because of who they were, so I'm sure it was tempting to find someone new who made you feel young and desirable, even if it was wrong and broke up their marriage.
