One of the best British Cop Television series ever made

I just don't understand in this day and age why we (The British) can't produce a other television series like the sweeney. It was true to life without the emotional rubbish you get in "The Bill". The stories were gritty and violent, the acting was brilliant and down to earth, the banter between the two lead actors was as natural as you would find on a building site.

ITV4 has just started repeating the Sweeney. A first class television production.

It's the best cop series I've ever seen, period.

I think one other '70s cop show that comes close to it is The Streets Of San Francisco, even though it was American.

The Professionals was great, too. A little far-fetched, yes, but it was more action-packed, some of the stories were clever and intricate and Shaw and Collins were just as good a double act as Thaw & Waterman.

I never saw much of Life On Mars, but I know some Sweeney fans didn't like it, because they thought it ridiculed the Seventies.

If you love the Sweeney there is one British cop show that matches it and became so controversial it was only ever shown once after the government gave the BBC a real rocketing.

Just released on DVD after a 30 year gap is GF Newman's Law and Order (nothing to do with the US show) which starred Derek Martin as a bent as buckles flying squad officer Fred Pyle.

Not exactly comfortable viewing it follows Pyle lining his pockets and stitching blagger Jack Lynn (Peter Dean). Told in four parts it follows the story fromt he point of view of the corrupt copper, an equally shadey lawyer and a professional villian. The final of the four episodes, the Prisoner's Tale, is one of the most compelling pieces of drama ever broadcast on British TV.

What's that supposed to mean?

What I meant was that I haven't seen any other British cop show that is as good as The Sweeney and that The Streets Of San Francisco is the closest I have seen to a show that matches The Sweeney, even if it is from another country.

I wasn't saying anything against it being American. There are quite a lot of US shows I do like.
