I still like catching up with the series on ITV4. The above episode with Michael Elphick was really good - with double dealing and characters who had obviously been watching the Richard Nixon video on sincerity.

The World on the 1970's looks so different now and I find it hard to believe that I was a very young man growing up during them (Yes I was a teenybopper).

There was always a healthy current of cynicism running through each episode - and it was very violent at times - not Hollywood style - but punches that looked as though they hurt if you were on the end of one.

Of course with no mobile phones in sight and clunky tape driven computers it was relatively low tech policing - but they usually got their man.

Nowadays could you imagine police having to queue for a red telephone box to become available.

The Sweeney is part of our national TV heritage as not only can we enjoy some of favourite actors but also enjoy streets full of people with no mobile phones glued to their cheeks.
