Gawd, there were so many! I thought Diana Dors as the mother-in-law from hell in Messenger of the Gods was absolutely superb. I also really liked Roy Kinnear as the small time crook who gets caught between the cops and the big villains in I Want the Man. Then there's John Tordoff's marvellous performance as the repulsive Stickley in Supersnout, and Colin ('OK Sweeney!') Welland as the tough Marine in Faces. George Sweeney as the psychotic Tim Cook in Taste of Fear and On the Run was flat-out awesome and Warren 'Alf Garnett' Mitchell's performance as the crooked car park attendant in Big Spender was touchingly memorable. And what about James Cosmo as Scottish detective Davy Freeth in Hard Men. Cosmo gets some great lines such as his 'And the next bastard who calls me Jock gets his head knocked off!' as well as this gem:
Freeth: Where I come from we don't batter down doors without a warrant.
Regan: Where you come from they batter everything from fried fish to bleedin' grandmothers!
Priceless.
I also thought Lynda Marchal (or Lynda LaPlante as she subsequently became) was fantastic as the hard as nails girlfriend in Victims. Agree with Morecombe & Wise too, they were hilarious.
I thought Patrick Mower and George Layton were awesome as Aussie crooks Col and Ray in the two episodes they starred in (Golden Fleece and Trojan Bus). They had a nice chemistry between them and looked as if they were really enjoying themselves.

Without a doubt, John Hurt, I think from 1977. Surely the world's first cyber crook? I can never forget him abandoning his class of trainees, instructing them to familiarise themselves with the "VDU, - the visual display unit", before slinking off to do some dirty deeds at the local bank via the telephone line.

Yeah, 'Tomorrow Man.' A great episode (though from '75 rather than '77) and featuring a sympathetic villain (Hurt) who actually gets away with it. George Cole is in there as well.
There's some great lines in that one, e.g.,
Regan: (reading a computer manual) It says here 'the cursor will guide the operator.' What's a cursor?'
Carter: (considers) Someone we nick for obscene language? (seeing Regan's expression) Sorry.
Regan: So you bloody well should be!
Carter: You're nicked.

Just seen this episode today on channel Dave (Sky) and also thought Hurt was excellent and it was good to see George Cole playing against type. Regan and Carter's lame attempts to stay behind with the attractive computer expert Jenny (who was the police 'plant') were very amusing as well - especially the consequence (**SPOILER**): "Do you want the bad news now, Guv? Haskins just pulled rank on you...he's taking Jenny out to dinner tonight!"

Can't recall the ep. names, but Di Dors was hilarious:
"Now you just listen to me Mr. Regal..."
"It's REGAN!!"
And Colin Welland over-acting: "Sweeeneyyyy!!"
I really liked Dudley Sutton in "Golden Boy." He came across as so sleazy, manipulative, and disgusting.

And of course there was Morecambe and Wise. Not the best episode perhaps, but still likeable.
shareThe vastly underrated Ken Hutchison in "Stay Lucky eh?", and not to forget the sadly missed Michael Elphick in "One of your own" And someone mentioned George Sweeney as Tim Cook, if i had to choose one it would be him simply because he was so terrifying. I saw "On the run" when I was barely into my teens and recently watched it again on DVD... that sight of him flinging that poor old man thru the window still sends a shiver down my spine!
shareThe music (Ron Geesin's Frenzy) makes that scene even more horrifying and his facial expressions are those that really do tell you the character is a lunatic. George Sweeney did brilliantly playing a monstrous maniac who was fascinating to watch.
Paul Antrim was a decent guest star in series 4's Nightmare which is now available on youtube (well, the first three parts). He plays such a vicious bad guy, basically an extension of the sleazy double-crossing thug he portrayed in BBC1's Gangsters, but he does it with a ruthless and quiet menace.
+1 to that.
Although nearly of them were great, really.
Theres so many to choose from, Diana Dors, Warren Mitchell, Brian Blessed, Roy Kinnear etc. I'll go with the lesser known guest stars George Sweeney (two fings I enjoy right....Kickin micks & fumping birds) & the brilliant John Tordoff as the slimey disgusting Joey Stickley. Every time I see Supersnout I want someone to stick him in a jetwash with a bar of carbolic!
The show was so damn good there wasnt a single moment or episode I didnt enjoy. And I was just a nippper who was always sent to bed when it was on! Thank god for the dvd box set!
Sorry to lower the tone, but my favourite is the actress who plays Tony Selby's girlfriend/wife. (I can't remember her name but I seem to remember she has passed away).
She has amazing boobs which she uses to taunt Carter and Regan in a nightclub, where she's dancing for her husband.
