Rockford Begins (2016)?

Recast the storyline with Jimbo a veteran of Iraq/Afganistan. Rocky could be a Vietnam vet who took up trucking in the 1970s.

Jim musters out of the army in 2006-7 and is mistakenly sent to prison. He gets his pardon in 2012-13 or so and establishes his PI career.

This would open up casting Jim to guys in their mid-30s. Jake Gyllenhaal?

He looks a little Rockford-y here:

Martin Sheen would make a good Rocky, but he's 76 and that would probably be too old -- better to get somebody in his early 60s.

Chris Cooper had real good father-son chemistry with Gyllenhaal in "October Sky," (1999), but in that movie he was much more of the stern no-nonsense disciplinarian rather than the laid-back friendly type Rocky is supposed to be.

Sheen resembles Noah Beery as Rocky a little bit more -- short, barrel-chested, etc. plus he's played a lighter-side father-figure type more than Cooper has.

Vince Vaughn is already attached to star in a Rockford movie. But if not Vince Vaughn, Josh Brolin and James Brolin, c'mon!!

I think Vaughn would probably be tempted to play the role too much as campy period comedy (i.e. "Anchorman").
