Rockford's Diet

Burgers, tacos, hot dogs, canned chili, Oreo cookies, cold-cut sandwiches, eggs, bacon, etc. I often wonder where James Garner's persona ends and Rockford's begins. I've always seen James Garner as a completely down-to-earth, unpretentious kind of guy, and despite the vast wealth the actor possessed, it's easy for me to picture him being completely content while chowing down on a couple of chili dogs or tacos loaded with hot sauce. Now either that was the real James Garner or the man was an even better actor than I thought.

Don't forget fish. If he caught it, he ate it. Unless Rocky got to it 1st.

Spenser with an "S", like the poet.

reply

Although he wasn't too fond of Rocky's fish stew, that included the heads for flavor.

I seem to recall an episode where Rockford gets jumped by some suited thugs outside his trailer--apparently this happened more than once-- and some fine steaks were among the damaged goods.

As for James Garner's taste in food, I wonder how often he himself was making an order at "Tail o' the pup"?

reply

I think they were ribs, actually. And he was annoyed that Rocky had thrown them out. "They were all over the place", Rocky explained.
It did happen more than once. Another time eggs were among the damaged goods, Rockford responding with "Those were large Grade A, I wish you hadn't done that".

Then there was the time Angel ordered the steak and split of champagne and put it on Jim's tab at a restaurant. Too bad Angel couldn't enjoy it as Anthony Boy and Syl interrupted the meal and stepped on it on their way out.

Annoying the world since 1960!

reply

Yah. Leave it to Angel.
"Leave it on the stoop!".

reply

Gearjammers, Part 1: "Those were X-large Grade A, 99 cents a dozen. I wish you hadn't done that." Hysterical.

reply

As I recall, Rockford mentions not liking garlic and onions, and I know this is true of Garner. It seemed like a fun thing to include as past of Jimbo's character.

reply

Yes, in the case of Garner and Mike Connors of Mannix, it goes without saying that those guys truly *are* the characters they portray.

reply

I believe his favorite food was Mexican, and the wrap party for the series was located at his favorite Mexican restaurant across the street from the studio.

reply

The wrap party was several months (if not several seasons) earlier than it should've been.

reply

Agreed, I think he was having some serious problems with his knees?

reply

Yes. And his back.

reply

How could a guy who didn't like onions and garlic have Mexican has his favorite restaurant?

reply

James Garner actually had an ulcer, so the prop food would have to be dumbed down -- no chili dogs and no hot sauce. His autobiography said that he hated garlic so much that he was aces at finding the North Koreans during the Korean War. They loved him on guard duty, because he could smell them coming in the dark. Anyone who's eaten Kim Chee would understand why.

And yes, James Garner was a far better actor than anyone gave him credit for. After getting knee surgery during the first hiatus, his knee was always hurting him. When it was so bad he couldn't hide it, they'd write it into the script. He did a lot of his own stunts in his youth, and that caught up with him later on. He ended his life in a wheel chair, at least part of the time. You have to hurt a lot to want to be stuck in one of those for any length of time. His wife said he was the saddest man she'd ever met. Despite all the pain -- physical and emotional -- he had the warmest smile and actually did have a good sense of humor...except about golf. Mac Davis used to golf with him, he said, because he was the only one who could stand his fits of temper.

But one of our local TV columnists interviewed him when he was appearing in a PR gig for a miniseries. Most of the reporters were in the main tent at the dog and pony show the producers were putting on, but our guy was in another tent watching Garner wolf down plain, iced shrimp and listening to stories. He said he wasn't so big on the production going on in the other tent. Actually, he hated public speaking. He only attended the award shows he thought he stood no chance of winning -- then he could relax and enjoy himself.

Good post, thanks

He was a good one.
