one of bbc's best

its really funny and a real fun to watch, one of bbc's best. loved it.

reply

It wasn't on the BBC, it was actually one of the few good ITV sitcoms (made by Yorkshire television).

reply

thanks for correcting me. actually ppl like me who dont live in the UK, we automatically assume that each and every british programme or sitcom is made by the BBC, maybe coz BBC is much better known and respected than other UK channels. Still, thanks. next time will check my facts before posting.

reply

Still - the base of your post was correct. Rising Damp is one of the best sit-coms ever.

IKEA! Swedish for Sh*te!

reply

yep, it is... love it, esp rigsby.

reply

Does anyone know if this diamond airs on any us stations. I used to view it on A&E in the mid-eighties but I havent seen one hint of this absolutely perfect sit-com which in my opinion rivals my fave of all time ALL IN THE FAMILY.Love the episode when Rigsby thinks Mrs Jones fur piece is Vienna his cat.Oh and the episode Fawcets python.

reply

You can buy the entire collection (all four seasons and the feature film) on DVD for around £15.00.

I'm amazed the message board isn't more active on this. Leonard Rossiter's comic performance in this has to be one of the best in the history of TV.

Of course a lot of the humour is politically incorrect and even though the butt of the joke is ultimately always Rigsby and never Philip, I imagine many viewers may find the dated attitudes portrayed here offensive.

A shame as I rank it with Fawlty and Only Fools.

reply

Yes just bought the box-set with all 4 series and movie. Not consistently as good as Fawlty & early OFAH but in some episodes Leonard Rossiter is amazing. What a genius.

I am probably one of the very few who prefer rising damp to fawlty towers.also this for me was leonard rossiter`s finest performance . anyone who could portray a racist homophobic and seedy looking man so well that you also see the lonely lovelorn man that you end up having sympathy for deserves the tag of genius

reply

lol, hahaha. poor ITV!!

reply

So much so, Sarah, that it was held as ITV's finest and only one (I'm not criticising myself, but ITV weren't known for 'great' comedy).
Indeed when the naughty Jonathan Ross was once reading out some accolades at an awards ceremony, he announced: "And the best comedies from ITV: 'Rising Damp, Rising Damp and Rising Damp!".

reply

I wish they made more such comedies.

reply

Wossy forgot to mention 'Man About The House', 'Nearest & Dearest', 'On The Buses', 'Shelley', 'Please Sir!', 'For The Love Of Ada', 'George & Mildred', 'Romany Jones', 'Father Dear Father', 'Doctor In The House' and its various sequels, 'Bless Me Father', 'Outside Edge', 'Billy Liar', 'In Loving Memory', 'Get Some In!' and yes, 'Love Thy Neighbour'. There was more to I.T.V. comedy than just 'Rising Damp'.

reply

Well unlike Rising Damp most of those were distinctly mediocre, though Shelly had a certain charm.

reply

There are many fine comedies you mention there, though some are really not so good. Wasn't The Lovers on ITV also?

reply

The New Statesman and Spitting Image are better than any of the ones you mentioned imo.
