Nancy Walker was gold

I felt like she was by far the funniest on the show. But they didn't use her nearly enough. I love Rhoda and all, but to me she's not laugh out loud funny like her mother. Brenda is great also. I'm only up to season 3 right now, and I do like the show, but I felt like they needed something more. Like a few more characters, more Ida, etc… With Mary Tyler Moore, I feel like that's the superior show because you have all these funny people at the station and it's not just Mary and her home life. I feel like Rhoda needs a little bit of a deeper cast.

MTM worked well because they found a cast of supporting characters who clicked from the first episode. They were here neighbors and her coworkers, and it was a nice mix of both.

RHODA (and even PHYLLIS) never had such luck on the show. Her sister Brenda was a staple there for five seasons (and they had great chemistry) but all the others came and went - none were truly missed. Susie, Myrna, Sally, Gary, Johnny Venture, Nick, Joe, Ma, Pop...they came and went in the first four seasons. By the time they tried build a cast for season 4/5 (Jack,Benny,Tina and Ramon), viewers were tired.

In one of the first episodes, they introduced the character of 'Linda' played by Linda Lavin on "The Shower" episode. Lavin stole the show for the ten minutes she was on - viewers loved her, producers loved her, the cast loved her. They realized they had gold, and was getting ready to write her in as a permanent cast member to the series. Apparently, on reflection, Harper realized she was a 'threat' - stealing the laughs from Harper herself on her own show. She then vetoed the idea, and would not let Lavin become part of the cast (what a mistake). They made 'Myrna' the recurring cast member instead - who was so-so. Lavin would get her own show on CBS a year later.

Yeah I like it so far. I'm up to the point where her and Joe are on the rocks. I just felt the cast was a little thin. I may be in the minority but I'm enjoying Phyllis more. I think it's a funnier show.

ANYTHING Nancy Walker played was a priceless role! Seriously, Julie, Valerie and Lorenzo were absolutely fabulous, too. Even the obvious "ha,ha,ha" in the live audience added to the levity of each, entire episode. (That obvious "ha,ha,ha" in the audience, incidentally was Lorenzo Music (Carlton) laughing.)

Gold? No she was platinum!!

I recently watched a few episodes which featured a lot of Ida and Nancy Walker had me in stitches the whole time.

The one episode is Rhoda finally meeting Joe's ex Marian. Ida begged her not to go. "I once met your father's old girlfriend. She was a dog. Totally ruined my respect for his taste in women." lol

The other episode is when Ida has a crush on her doctor and wants Rhoda and Brenda to talk her out of seeing him. Just too funny for words. Nancy Walker never seemed to say lines that were supposed to be "funny". It was her deadpan delivery that was so funny. We really have lost a comedy gem. She was hilarious.
