Rhoda's Wedding

Now here's one for the record books. HUGE RATINGS!!
I think one of the best written/produced episodes...ever. Really great. The whole location shooting in NYC. Rhoda in a her Wedding dress running all over New York. Perfect situation for Rhoda and a TV Classic.
Cloris as Phyllis is at her best here. Her scenes as Phyllis in the episode were hilarious. As a fan of MTM, this I think may be my favorite 'Phyllis' moments: Phyllis in Rhoda's apartment 'dissing' NYC, Phyllis at Ida and Martin's dinner, then later begging forgiveness from all the wedding guests. Her moment with Nancy Walker's 'Ida' is priceless.

The scenes of Rhoda trying to hail a cab and riding the subway to her wedding were priceless. I wonder if those were filmed during normal transit hours?

"Rhoda's Wedding" is the stuff of great ensemble comedy – strong writing, a story with great momentum, a cast with each person serving a crucial purpose, and hilarity at every turn. One of the best episodes (actually, two-parters) of a sitcom ever. Too bad that marriage didn't last. ;-)

This is why I cringe when today's viewers think "2 BROKE GIRLS" and "WHITNEY" are laugh-out-loud comedies. Are they kidding?

Anyone know why when ME-TV aired this episode
that they used uich an outdated looking print?

I hdd never seen it in my life (being 6 in 1974)
and I finally get to and they can't use a DVD for the broadcast?

"Hi, Rhoda. What's new?"

At the time, the show was the second most watched episode in TV ratings history...and not far from first-place winner "I Love Lucy" - when Lucy gave birth to Little Ricky.

Opposite "Rhoda" on CBS, was ABC's "Monday Night Football" which got trounced in the ratings that night. At one point, legendary sports announcer Howard Cossell said to his audeince, "I hear congratulations are in order for Rhoda Morgenstern who is getting married tonight on another network." Classy moment!

I tend to forget that Lucy still holds the records for the most-watched
TV episode. And the strange thing is while I LOVE ILL, that episode
has always been one of my least favorites. Also, in 1953, Lucy didn't
have much competition, did she? Much harder for networks today to
get people to tune in, let alone not channel surf.

I just finished reading Valerie's autobiography, "I, Rhoda". In the book she discusses this episode, and it was indeed filmed during a regular day in NYC. At one point when they were filming the subway scenes, she saw a businessman standing on the platform who had just been beaten and robbed of his briefcase and instinctively ran over to help him when the "Rhoda" wardrobe lady threw herself bodily in front of Val and admonished her about possibly getting blood on the wedding dress. What a story! Why does everything happen to Rhoda, lol?

Rhoda's Wedding - 35.1 rating and 51 share, and these numbers were usual for All in the Family and The Cosby Show at their peak.

ME TV has finished running the five seasons of RHODA (for the most part) so this week coming up (3-13) should start with the very first episode again...meaning Rhoda's wedding will probably be aired in April/May.

However, I checked my DVR schedule for this week, and it looks like they are going back to the middle of Season 3, and airing those episodes instead...for some reason, back in December, they ended in the middle of Season 3 and jumped into Season 4.

So hello, Sally Gallagher and Johnny Venture!

reply

Actually, the second half of Season 3 didn't have Gallagher, thank God. She was dropped by the end of December, 1976 (I think the New Year's Eve episode is the last we see of her). Not sure how many times Venture returns.

I agree. It wasn't especially funny, most importantly, Lucy. I don't recall her even having any funny lines(except when she says "wait for me")

I have a question about the wedding episode. I distinctly remember Rhoda kicking Phyllis in the shin in the original episode. I watched it on Hulu last night, and that never happened. I also see mention of it on Google, but it's not in any of the You Tube versions. Was it edited out?

Thanks....

You're thinking of the show "Phyllis", when Mother Dexter got married and Phyllis forgot to pick her up, as well for her wedding. When Phyllis is trying to laugh the whole thing off with embarrassment, Mother Dexter kicks her in the shin. Very funny scene.
