how can they not have grenades?

They have hand guns and rifles yet grenades seem beyond their technology?
If they can create bullets and guns then grenades shouldn't be hard for them.

reply

The apes do have hand grenades. They used one to blow up the ship, then Virdon and Burke broke into Zaius' place to steal one to blast Galen out of jail.

reply

In the first episode, the grenades were human artifacts. The apes had no idea how to make them but one of the apes had them in his house.

reply

That's true. I recall Zaius saying (after the astronauts asked him whose they originally were) "He didn't live long enough to give me his name."

reply

I find it more ridiculous that the Apes didn't know how to make fishing nets.

I'd like ten thousand marbles please.

reply

If the apes were doing the job themselves, I'm sure they would've come up with better ways to catch the fish, but since they're using slaves, there was little reason, at least in their minds, to come up with better techniques.

reply

Well, that's not necessarily true, there was an economic & political incentive to come up with a more efficient ways to catch fish.

Eli Whitney wasn't picking cotton but he invented the cotton gin to increase cotton production.

Fishing nets have been around since 10,000 b.c. so that's something the apes should have easily figured out. They should have figured it out before they figured out late 19th century surgery techniques.

gsharkey,

LOL! Yeah it seemed like the Apes were dumber on the t.v. show than they had been in the movies. Then some things didn't make sense like they had very formal and complex systems of government & education yet like you said, they hadn't invented the fishing net. They had 19th-20th century weapons but they hadn't invented the magnifying glass. They were performing surgery & psycho analysis but they hadn't perfected horseshoe technology.

It always seemed like Alan was teaching the Apes about some kind of project that was based on the boy scouts or 5th grade science & math.

reply

Remember, the apes didn't eat fish, so the art of fishing was probably pretty new to them.
The magnifying glass thing is a mystery, though, because some of the apes wore glasses (e.g. Wanda on "The Interrogation").

reply

The apes probably witnessed the humans spearing the fish which gave them the idea for free fertilizer. They enslaved the village and let the humans continue catching the fish the way it looked like it was supposed to be done.

reply

There was a lot of speciesism on the Planet of the Apes. The chimpanzees were the scientists who probably would have created technology like grenades. The gorillas were military and law enforcement. And the orangutans were the politicians. Maybe the chimps and/or orangutans did not trust the gorillas with grenades.

reply

I always got the impression that gorillas and orangutans didn't trust the chimpanzees.
