Roddy

really made this series. I own everything POTA and watching this series right now it's amazing how classy an undated his performance is.

I'm watching one scene and every eye movement he makes, every facial twitch, really shows his skill. LOVE this guy.

'Then' and 'than' are completely different words and have completely different meanings.

He is definitely the best part of the series and the best part of the last 3 POTA movies. He's also in one of my favorite TWILIGHT ZONE epiosode. It was called PEOPLE ARE ALIKE ALL OVER.

Readiness is all.

He also starred in another short-lived sci-fi series that I used to watch back in the 70s - Fantastic Journey.

It was a real asset getting Roddy as part of this cast. It's amazing, really, that although he plays three chimpanzees throughout the course of the movies and TV show, all three are very different in spite of the makeup limitations! That is a true indication of what a fine actor McDowall was. Cornelius, Caesar, and Galen are three separate and unique characterizations.

I had the pleasure of meeting Roddy and speaking with him for quite some time in 1992. He said he liked playing Galen most of all.

reply

Wow, you met him...
Yes, I saw an interview clip on the Sci-Fi Channel around that time, and he said Galen was the most "fun" character to play out of the three.

reply

Yes, I met Roddy at a book signing... but there were not many people there, so there was often a break in the flow from time to time where I was able to approach him and converse. I did not overstay my welcome, but he was really delightful. He signed a photo for me, as well as autographing my one sheet poster for CONQUEST. I was also able to compliment him on the final speech in CONQUEST, which I always thought was a great performance. He laughed graciously and agreed: "Ha Ha Ha ... Wasn't that grand!"

Nice. Too bad about the cancer though.

reply

That was terrible. It seemed to happen out of nowhere, and Roddy was gone fast. He might have been ill for some time but never announced it. He died in 1998, which was right after he narrated the BEHIND THE POTA documentary. We are very fortunate to have Roddy's participation in that project.

I wonder what role he would've had in Burton's Apes film.

reply

I'd bet on the role David Warner had of Ari's father.
