Why is it characters either didn't drink or were alcoholics?

I, at least don't ever remember a character that had an even balance.

I could be wrong.

It’s been a while since I’ve seen an episode, but now that you mention it, I can only recall Edwards as the sole alcohol consumer in Walnut Grove. Then again, he was also apparently the sole sufferer of hydrophobia, as evidenced by his refusal to come in contact with H2O, and the fact that he never saw the inside of a bathtub in 9 years :D

Now I’m going totally on memory here. But I do want to say that Chuck was prone to taking a nip every now and then. Which I’m sure was a good thing, considering that the last thing that you ever want a dude that goes around punching out folks that disagree with him when he’s sober, is to take up the drink :D

And Mr. Edwards looked it.
100% that he never showered, LOL!.

Wow I don't remember a chuck.

Like you I am going by memory.
But I don't ever remember any of the main characters even taking a nip of sherry.

But the people that did drink always overdid it.
Got into fights, harassed the local townfolks, beat their kids. Beat up Charles (man that man could not fight)

Oh right, there you go. I forgot about the dude that was a drunk, and beat up his kid.

Chuck is just my semi-derogatory term for Charles. Nothing personal against ML, but I never cared for his one dimensional, punch first, ask questions later, characters. His version of little Joe was identical to his version of Pa Ingalls. Just switch the scripts, and the faces that his fists came into contact with, and you’re there :D

This series takes place in the 1800s, where there weren't many illegal drugs available. Most parts of decent society either drank very little, or not at all.

People didn't have a lot of mind-altering, body-destroying drugs to turn to in that time period, so a lot of lower levels of society turned to alcohol. You think drunkards were bad these days, it was much worse in the Victorian Era. It's one reason we had people going on social crusades against the "evils of drink" in that time of history.

Good explanation.
