I read a post on Facebook and Kathy and Wesley were saying about how they agreed to the reason Spencer left, but it was never elaborated on. I still can't find out why he left.
I suppose that with his leaving, they had to get a new plot... either that or they just got new writers.

Spencer quit because he wasn't getting a cut of the merchandising. Not sure why Season 3 had different writers and the huge slip in quality.
shareThat doesn't make a lot of sense. There wasn't a lot of merchandising of LOTL at the time, so it wouldn't make sense to quit a steady paycheck for a few dollars. Also, given it being Holllllywood, no telling if you'd ever get another job, which for Spencer, appears to have been the case.

There were dolls, lunch boxes, comics etc that used their likenesses. But I agree that's a silly reason to leave the show. I wonder if he thought he was more in demand than he actually was or if he was fine leaving Hollywood. They touched so many of our lives, especially kids who were in broken families that could relate to the Marshals. Or in one case, Wesley said a woman was in tears and explained that she and her brother weren't allowed to leave there house because of gangs shooting, so they played LOTL on weekends. How can someone not want to be a part of that?
