Johnny Depp is about to make my dreams come true! He will be playing none other than Carl Kolchak the Night Stalker in a film of the same name from Disney. Freakosity is a very vast subject.
I had my doubts about Depp, but the more I think about it, the more I can imagine it working.Anyone ever seen him in Fear and Loathing?His voiceovers/monologues ('This was not a good town for psychedelic drugs,'etc) in that movie (assuming it was actually him) reminded me a lot of how Darren McGavin's voiceovers sounded in Kolchak.Also, the way he stumbled around a lot in that movie reminded me a lot of the way Kolchak would often blunder/trip over when he was being chased.So he's definitely got the physical acting side perfected.
I just hope they age/rough him up (figuratively speaking) a bit as well, although if Disney are aiming for a blockbuster movie they might want their star to remain recognizable.Hopefully, they won't be blatantly trying to aim to start a franchise (hate that word) like Pirates, but a more low-key release.Maybe if Depp's last few movies haven't been that successful, they'll hype this more on its own merits, rather than as a vehicle for its star.

Does Depp mean Tim Burton? If so, it'll probably be missable. I don't think Burton's made a memorable movie since "Ed Wood". He simply doesn't know a good script from a weak one.

Kolchak is just one of those TV characters that can only be done by one person. And he can only be seen to be done by one person. Darren McGavin. No one else. Stuart Townsend tried it and almost did it. But he never quite managed due to him not being Darren McGavin and also them giving him a female sidekick that ruined the whole thing. I was ready to give him the benefit of the doubt. But it wasn't to be. And The Deppster wont make it work either.
Darren McGavin will always be Carl Kolchak. They can try and imitate or replace him in the role. But they will NEVER better Mr McGavin.

Does anyone here believe for one minute that, in Kolchak's hard-boiled, tough-guy milieu, Tony Vincenzo would ever put up with Depp's standard eyelash-fluttering, camera-mugging fem-botting around the office? He'd eat him alive, and rightly so!
Or will Disney just "re-imagine" (read, water down and puss out) Kolchak's universe, like everything else in our poor, abused pop culture?

Ahh, totally agreed, Jetfire. Dark Shadows was awful.
Depp's been great a lot of the time, but lately he's turned being eccentric into his schtick, and it's all become just too predictable. I can't imagine him doing Kolchak justice with his mugging. Besides, Kolchak always had a certain schmuck quality to him that I think Depp is too, well, elegant for, and even a bit effete. Not a criticism, just a reason why he's all wrong for the part.
