their dinner slooked awful

different diet guidelines in 1950s....compared to today. They had 'basic four food groups' (stopped in 1992....)and really did not think much about cholesterol. Certainly did not think about gluten.

Plus without internet and unless they did go on a physical journey they typically had much less exposure to different foods and cultures.
