Fonzie going all-moral?

In the episode when Joanie and Chachi get stranded at the motel - Fonzi shows up angry thinking that they ad sex. Are we supposed to believe Fonzi was a virgin? Or a hypocrite?

reply

He was probably angry because he wanted to tap that ass before chachi

reply

It was the 50s.., so yes he was a hypocrite by today's standards (and prob 50s as well).

Chachi was Fonz's nephew and he considered Joanie like his sister or even daughter, so he did not want them "corrupted" too soon (they were very young) or at least get in "trouble".

There's an old expression: "do as I say, not as I do"

reply

Bingo. Protective older brother syndrome.

reply

They were both at least eighteen, no?

reply

Huh.. don't recall. By the time the Joanie and Chachi thing was going on I lost interest in the show but I do recall seeing it at least once.

Still for the 50s, premarital intercourse even among those of legal age (or was it 21 back then?) was frowned upon. And what if Joanie got pregnant? Things were a lot different then.

reply

I recall an episode where he is also very upset when he finds out Joanie is planning on posing nude. There was a lot of hypocrisy and inconsistencies with the Fonz's character. It's what happens when your break out "Hood" character becomes very popular with the kiddies.

reply

those episodes are probably Henry Winkler showing through....I suspect the writers etc let him do it gaping holes and all just bc they were scared to death of what would happen to the show....and them if he walked.

Winkler wasn't a hard partying type at all and was acutely aware that little kids especially looked up to him.

Some stars want larger dressing room, some want cocaine.....others want character control. Must have seemed like a very reasonable trade off at the time.

reply

The show became family friendly well before that but yeah it was probably Winkler wanting to be a role model for kids. I was a kid watching it in those later seasons and in re runs. I never saw him as a role model and in fact as I got older and saw eps the Fonz became more and more of a joke to me.

reply

Fonz was always moralistic at least after the first season. Fair enough if Winkler is a nice guy in reality but it is boring when the actor forgets they are an actor and starts using the character as an outlet for their own personality.

I think an ep where Joanie poses nude (and I know we wouldn't have seen anything) would have been interesting. Earlier on in the series they did an ep where Howard goes to a strip club and Richie and gang get in on fake ids.

reply

I remember the creators of Beavis and Butthead said the same thing. That was why they never wanted Beavis and Butthead "civilized".

reply

That's understandable, considering the morals of the time.

Posing nude back then was almost as bad as doing hard core porn today.

reply

Got too preachy.and liberal- unfortunate habit with soaps and American sitcoms.
