Where did show come from?

Did Chico And The Man originate on it's own or was it spinoff from "Sanford And Son"? We have been kicking this around and no one seems to remember it right. Someone thought Prinze was brought in to replace Lamont and I thought maybe he (Chico) was Lamont's buddy. Any ideas? Thanks

It was an original show of its own. It used to come on NBC. No ties to the plot or characters of SANFORD AND SON.

Sanford & Son had 2 spinoffs. Sandford Arms(where Fred and Lamont own a hotel and Fred's old Army buddy runs it) and Sandford(Sandford & Son without the son, instead a co-worker of Lamont's in Alaska who is from Texas and is Fred's new partner).

There was also a VEEERRRY short-lived spinoff called GRADY about the misadventures of Grady Wilson (Whitman Mayo). He was living with his daughter and son-in-law. It was supposed to be terrible.

That show about Grady was just one episode of Sanford and Son. It never became a show of its own.

yes it did. I used to watch it regularly when it was on tv in the 1970's. And yes, I'm talking about the tv series "Grady", not "Sanford * Son"

It was a short-lived show, as the other poster said. However, it was indeed a weekly tv series for the time it lasted.

and it did air weekly.

in the U.S.

I also watched "Sanford & Son" regularly.

Sanford allso had the spinoff Grady. I think it may have been on one season.

actually there was and is.

While it's not a spin-off and definitely it's own show, there was indeed a tie-in.

it was on Chico & the Man where the man mentions he got his tires (or some car parts) from Sanford & Son

and was expevting a visit from either Fred Sanford or Lamont or both of them..

However as I recall, neither character actualy ever showed up on the show

although I might have missed it or forgotten it.

I think at least one of the minor charactersfrom S&S showed up on C&tm although I'm not sure about that part.

But I definitely remember him mentioning getting some parts from Sanford & Son and expexting them to show up.

…of "Sanford and Son". In the very first episode, Grady shows up at Fred's house to tell him that his son-in-law, daughter and grandchildren are moving into their new house, and he is going to live with them. As he leaves Fred says that he will call him every day, and he will miss him. Then Grady says something (I forgot what exactly) and Fred slams the door in his face.

Later in the episode, Fred and Elroy go over to the new house to deliver Grady's belongings. If this is not a tie-in to Sanford and Son, I sure don't know what is…and how could it not be a spin-off when it started on the original show "Sanford and Son" and ended up someplace else?

The episode is, by the way, on youtube for all to see. The title of the episode is "Be It Ever So Humble"...

How the hell would anyone in their right mind think this was a spin off from S&S?

reply

Neither me nor anyone of my friends are in their right mind. Thanks for the info and input everyone!

reply

Maybe because both of them had to do with the inner city. Maybe because one of the neighbors on Sanford was a great Puerto Rican actor. Maybe because both shows were about the conflict between a young man and an old man.

Take your meds, dude.

Because on "Chico and the Man", the man aka Ed said he bought some tires from Sanford and Son. And also said he was expecting a visit from Sanford and Son.

That Fred and/or Lamont would show up.

Even though Chico and the Man was not a spin off of Sanford and Son.

sort of like how the Diff'rent Strokes characters showed up on Hello, Larry *or was it vice versa or both) even though neither show was a spin-off of the other.

If I remember correctly, Chico came on right after Sanford on Friday nights. I hated missing Chico, I was so in love with Freddie Prinze, but I was often busy on Friday nights as I was in high school during it's run on NBC. Wish we could have had a VCR or DVR back then!

reply

I'm pretty sure you remember correctly: "Sanford and Son" aired first at 9 (8 Central), "Chico and the Man" followed at 9:30 (8:30 Central), definitely on Friday nights. The two shows were a natural combination even though this wasn't a spinoff.

Then a few hours later "The Midnight Special" aired. What a great time to be watching television when you were too young to be going out! And yes, I wish I had a VCR back then as well.

I think Sanford and Son was an African-American version of All in the Family and Chico and the Man was related to Sanford and Son as well.

There's no more Hollywood anymore, there's just a bunch of banks

When Tommy Chong was on the Joe Rogan Experience he said that Chico and the Man was inspired by one of his and Cheech's skits.
