Professor Yaffel

Did David Kossoff play the voice of Professor Yaffel? I think he did, but there's no entry on David Kossoff IMDb entry.

If you could see what I've seen with your eyes!

No, that's Oliver Postgate's voice - one of his voices at any rate. On that subject, there was a question on Mastermind recently asking the name of the woodpecker on Bagpuss with "the German accent"! Professor Yaffle isn't German!! He's just posh! That is to say, he speaks with the clear, clipped tones of one with an analytical mind and a no-nonsense approach to matters; articulation often associated with the well-heeled and/or erudite. Someone who does speak in this manner is Professor Heinz Wolff, who happens to be German and therefore also has a German accent. But Professor Yaffle does not have a German accent! He just enunciates very well - please don't confuse the two, John Humphrys!

reply

Perhaps Professor Yaffle was a Nazi spy.

Just a painted face on a trip down suicide row

Thank you. I did suspect it might be OP when "Bagpuss" didn't come up under DK's page.

He's a semi-aquatic, egg-laying, mammal of action

reply

Apparently he was based on the philosopher Bertrand Russell, who Oliver Postgate once met.

oh I *DO* hope that that is the case! - if so, what a little gem of a fact - thank you so much for posting that! x :-)
