This "crap" is a classic and will be forever with us!

Zardoz has many flaws, and is often ridicolous and preposterous.
Some call it crap from the 70s.

I think it's a classic and a cult movie, and in ANY AGE IN THE FUTURE it will be seen as an original, unique and weird work of science fiction.

I remember someone on the old IMDB boards saying smth like: One needs to have a certain knowledge of philosophy, sociology, comparative religion etc. to understand it.

I agree. Zardoz is a flawed film but a unique and important one nevertheless.

Zardoz!

From Zardoz we learned this bit of sex ed touchingly apropos for the #Metoo era:

Penic erection was one of the many unsolved evolutionary mysteries surrounding sexuality. Every society had an elaborate subculture devoted to erotic stimulation...Sexuality declined probably because we no longer needed to procreate. Eternals soon discovered that erection was impossible to achieve. And we are no longer victims of this violent, convulsive act which so debased women and betrayed men.

I discovered this movie recently and was pleasantly surprised. Definitely underrated.

Low budget, campy, and overly long trippy segments seemingly for their own sake, yes. But also pretty mind blowing, story wise, with some good twists by the end when it all came together. (I'm sure its creators took a few mind blowing substances while making it, too, heh.)

It also aged well by avoiding the scifi trap of going into much detail on how the tech works. There's a bit of BS about EM waves and crystals near the end but the rest is pretty relatable even to our present tech. Smart rings!

And its contrarian (for its time) sociopolitical message resonates pretty well in our current political climate.

Yes, like a lot of British science fiction, it does not concentrate on hardware, it is more concerned with ideas and plot. I loved this movie.

I loved this movie, it was great.

I think you mean "ridiculous".

reply

Amazing that there was a time when studios would take a chance and finance a movie like this.

Yes, I agree.
Nowadays edgy and experimental is "deadpool" or "guardians of the galaxy"......

Yep, a classic in my book. It's just fun to watch. I've seen it a fair few times.
