What's the original title?

IMDb gives "What?" as the films original title, but my DVD gives "Che?" as the films title. The credits, and mostly all dialogue, were in Italian, so it seems to me as if it's original title should be "Che?" and not "What?". Am I right, or has my version got translated credits, which were originally in English?

The film is an Italian production, so 'Che?' (the Italian for 'What?') would be the original title. In fact, I'm pretty sure that it was originally listed on IMDb under the Italian title (kind of like how The Tenant is listed under its French title) until some point last year when it was changed to 'What?'

I'm guessing, even though the Italian version would have been dubbed like all Italian films produced during the 1970's and that the actors would have been speaking English or broken-English on set, the credits would have still been in Italian.

Thanks for your insights, they're appreciated. I'll put it down as Che? in my personal list of films I own. Perhaps I'll take the trouble of trying to get IMDb to list it under the original title again.

The main character in the film refers to the movie title as "What?"

But then she also speaks only English in the film, even though her diary is written in Italian.

I saw it on television last week and the diary was written in French.

What?

In NYC the title was a simple question mark.

Yes it is.

My parents had this recorded off cable when I was a kid, the title was: Diary of forbidden dreams. Not the ORIGINAL title, that. Just something they slapped on it for the initial american release. This drove me crazy for years, as it's virtually unknown under that title now, and not knowing it was polanski I couldn't for the life of me find it for the longest time.
